Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7303

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let hot food cool down, for there is no blessing in hot food."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "extremely weak" (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Arzami is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator, and his son Abd al-Rahman is also weak. We have not found this narration through this particular route anywhere other than with the author (al-Hakim).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (6209) through the route of Abdullah bin Yazid al-Bakri, from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, via Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah, as "marfu'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hatim al-Razi says that the narrator of this chain, Abdullah bin Yazid al-Bakri, is "dhahib al-hadith" (severely weak and unreliable).
Reference / Source: Musaddad narrated it in his "Musnad" (as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 2398), and likewise al-Daylami transmitted it in "Musnad al-Firdaws" (as in "al-Maqasid al-Hasanah" p. 11) through the route of Abd al-Samad bin Sulayman. Both of them (Musaddad and Abd al-Samad) narrate it from Qaza'ah bin Suwayd, from Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) as marfu': "Cool your food, for there is no blessing in hot food".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the printed edition of "al-Matalib", "Abi Yahya" occurs instead of Ibn Umar. We say: its narrator Qaza'ah bin Suwayd is "da'if" (weak).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (8/252) through the route of Muhammad bin al-Musayyab, and by Abu Sa'id al-Naqqash in "Fawa'id al-Iraqiyyin" (7) and Ibn Bashkuwal in "al-Athar al-Marwiyyah" (156) through the route of Zakariyya bin Yahya bin Durust. Both of them narrate from Abdullah bin Khubayq, from Yusuf bin Asbat, from Muhammad bin Ubaydullah al-Arzami and Sufyan al-Thawri, from Safwan bin Sulaym, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked cauterisation (as treatment) and hot food, and he would say: Eat cool food, for there is blessing in it, and there is no blessing in hot food".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan al-Thawri is not mentioned in Abu Nu'aym's chain, and we fear that this (the mention of Sufyan) is not preserved, and that al-Arzami (who is matruk) is alone in narrating it. After it, Abu Nu'aym said that it is "gharib" as a hadith of Safwan, and we have written it only from the hadith of Yusuf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Ibn Ma'in declared Yusuf bin Asbat trustworthy, while according to Abu Hatim he cannot be used as proof, and al-Bukhari says that his hadiths do not come out (correctly) as they should.
