It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I saw the Muhajirun and the Ansar digging the trench around Madinah, carrying earth on their backs and saying: "We are the ones who have pledged allegiance to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) upon Islam, for as long as we live." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was answering them, saying: "O Allah! The real good is only the good of the Hereafter, so bless the Ansar and the Muhajirun." Then a bowl would be brought to them containing two handfuls of coarsely crushed barley, prepared in stale, rancid fat. It would be placed before the people while they were in a state of severe hunger, and that food would stick in the throat and had a foul smell.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this addition.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts available to us this name has suffered corruption (error) and is written as "Ja'far".
Note / Clarification: The word established in the text is taken from manuscript (Z), while in manuscript (S) and manuscript (M) the word "mithl" is found in its place.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Ishaq refers to Imam Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ahmad bin Hafs refers to Ahmad bin Hafs bin Abdullah bin Rashid. Reference / Source: It was narrated in full and in abridged form by al-Bukhari (2835) and (4100) and al-Nasa'i (8260) through the route of Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id from Abd al-Aziz bin Suhayb. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Bukhari's second place, the addition at the end of the narration, on account of which al-Hakim included it as an addition, is also present; therefore al-Hakim's istidrak of it is his "oversight" (dhuhul). Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (21/13646 and 14068), Muslim (1805/130), al-Nasa'i (6602) and Ibn Hibban (7259) via Thabit al-Bunani from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). In all the sources other than Ahmad this narration is reported in "abridged" form. (12722). Details of the narration: The story of digging the trench at the Battle of the Trench and the reciting of these verses is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) through several routes; for its full sourcing see hadith number (12722) of Musnad Ahmad. Note / Clarification: The word "mashjush" mentioned in the text is derived from the lexicon; it is said that when wheat is coarsely ground it is called "jashish" or "majshush". Note / Clarification: "Al-ihalah" refers to all oils or fats that are used as a relish with bread (idam), while "sanikhah" means rancid (zanikhah); the two words are the same in both pattern and meaning.
