Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7267

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Jewish woman gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a roasted goat as a gift. When the people stretched out their hands to it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Hold back your hands, for one of its limbs is telling me that it is poisoned." The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for the woman and asked: "Did you put poison in this food?" She said: Yes. I thought that if you are (Allah forbid) not a true prophet, I would relieve the people of you, and if you are true, I was certain that Allah Almighty would inform you of it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mention the name of Allah and eat." So we ate, and it did not harm any of us at all.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is munkar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration contradicts the authentic hadiths which mention that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned that the sheep was poisoned, he (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions stopped eating. It is also established that Bishr bin al-Bara' bin Ma'rur (may Allah be pleased with him) died because of that meal, as has passed with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (5032) and (5033). The authentic narrations mention that the effect of this poison remained in his (peace and blessings be upon him) palate, and it has passed with the author at numbers (4441) and (5032) that this very poison was the cause of the severing of his (peace and blessings be upon him) aorta (abhar).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Attab Sahl bin Hammad was contradicted in both the chain and the text of this narration.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bazzar in "Kashf al-Astar" (2424) and Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (147) through the route of Hilal bin Bishr. Al-Bazzar also mentioned Sulayman bin Sayf al-Harrani alongside Hilal, and both of them narrate it from Sahl bin Hammad with this same chain.
Important point: After this narration, al-Bazzar says: "To our knowledge this narration is reported from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) only through this one route".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Uthman bin Jabalah contradicted Sahl bin Hammad; he narrated it from Abd al-Malik bin Abi Nadrah, from his father, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Thus he made it part of the Musnad of Jabir, and he did not mention in it the sentence: "Mention the name of Allah and eat; so we ate, and it did not harm any of us at all".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/260) through the route of Muhammad bin Rizam al-Marwazi, from Khalaf bin Abd al-Aziz, from his father Abd al-Aziz bin Uthman bin Jabalah, from his father Uthman.
Grading: This chain is "hasan".
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin Rizam al-Marwazi (Abu Ahmad) is a jurist and man of letters whom Ibn Makula mentioned in "al-Ikmal" (4/46); Abu Bakr bin Ali al-Hafiz made a selection of narrations from him, and he is among the teachers of Ibn Adi. He is not the "Muhammad bin Rizam al-Basri" (al-Ubulli) who is accused and mentioned in "Mizan al-I'tidal".

Important point: The word "samitan" means roasted meat (mashwiyyah).
