It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you eats food, let him take the name of Allah (say Bismillah); and if he forgets at the beginning, then (when he remembers) let him say: 'Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi' (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In manuscript (Z) this name has been corrupted into "Ali bin al-Husayn al-Hamdani".

Important point: In manuscript (Z) this word has been corrupted into the diminutive form "Ubaydullah".

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting reports), but this particular chain is weak because Umm Kulthum (al-Laythiyyah) is "majhul" (unknown), as we have preferred in "Musnad Ahmad" (42/25106).
Note / Clarification: Affan refers to "Affan bin Muslim".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (42/25733, 43/26089 and 26292), Abu Dawud (3767), al-Tirmidhi (1858) and al-Nasa'i (10040) through various routes from Hisham al-Dastuwa'i with this same chain, and in some of them a story is also mentioned.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It was narrated by Ahmad (42/25106), Ibn Majah (3264) and Ibn Hibban (5214) through the route of Yazid bin Harun, from Hisham, from Budayl, from Abdullah bin Ubayd, from Aishah; Umm Kulthum is not mentioned in it, while the correct version is what the group of narrators reported (with the mention of Umm Kulthum).
