Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7247

It is narrated from Sahl bin Atiyyah that he said: I was with Bilal bin Abi Burdah at al-Taff when a man (al-Da'l) came and complained to him that the people of al-Taff do not pay zakah. Bilal sent a man to investigate what they were saying, and that man found that the lineage of this complainant was impugned. He came back and informed Bilal, whereupon Bilal said "Allahu Akbar" and said: My father narrated to me from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever runs about (to harm) people or carries tales is not of legitimate birth, or there is some trace of that in him." This hadith, narrated from Bilal bin Abi Burdah, has several chains, of which this is the best.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Important point: In our manuscripts this name is recorded with "dal", whereas in al-Khara'iti and Ibn Asakir it is narrated with "ra'" or "zay"; according to al-Khara'iti, he was the police chief (sahib al-shurtah) of Bilal bin Abi Burdah.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Concerning Sahl bin Atiyyah al-A'rabi, Ibn Hibban wrote in "al-Majruhin" that he is a shaykh of the people of Basrah with few hadiths and "munkar" narrations, and that his solitary narrations cannot be accepted because rejected material predominates in his narrations; Ibn Hibban cited this very hadith as an example of his, but then contradicted himself by also mentioning him in "al-Thiqat" (8/289) without any criticism.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Also, as will come in the takhrij, the name of "Abu al-Walid, the mawla of Quraysh", between Sahl and Bilal, has dropped out of the narration of Muhammad al-Ansari; he is a "majhul" (unknown) narrator.
Reference / Source: Al-Khara'iti narrated it in "I'tilal al-Qulub" (514) and "Masawi' al-Akhlaq" (225), and through him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (10/508), by way of Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi, from Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Ansari, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/102), and through him al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6248), from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, and al-Harbi in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/603) from Nasr bin Ali. Both of them narrate it from Marhum bin Abd al-Aziz, from Sahl bin Atiyyah al-A'rabi, from Abu al-Walid (a mawla of Quraysh), from Bilal bin Abi Burdah, with the wording: "No one transgresses against people except a child born of fornication, or one who has a trace of it in him."
Note / Clarification: Here the intermediary "Abu al-Walid, the mawla of Quraysh" is added between Sahl bin Atiyyah and Bilal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Asakir (10/508) narrated it by way of Sa'd bin Abd al-Hamid, from al-Hasan bin Khalid al-Basri, from Muhammad bin Thabit, who said: A man came to Bilal bin Abi Burdah, and he mentioned it. The narrator al-Hasan bin Khalid is unknown to us, and his teacher Muhammad bin Thabit is, in our strong opinion, Ibn Aslam al-Bunani, who is "da'if" (weak), and there is agreement on his weakness.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Shaykh narrated it in "al-Tawbikh wa al-Tanbih" (219) by way of Ibrahim bin Yusuf al-Maqdisi, from Amr bin Bakr, from Ikrimah bin Ibrahim al-Azdi, from Bilal, with the wording: "No one transgresses against people except one who keeps company with prostitutes, and one who does not care what he says or what is said about him; such a person is born of fornication, or Satan has a share in him."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin Yusuf is Ibn Muhammad bin Yusuf, attributed to his grandfather; al-Saji said that he narrates "munkar and false" reports, and al-Azdi declared him "saqit" (discarded), while Abu Hatim called him "saduq" (truthful). Amr bin Bakr is "matruk" (abandoned), and his shaykh Ikrimah is agreed to be weak.
Important point: The phrase "لغير رشدة" (with fathah or kasrah on the ra') means: "not from a valid marriage" (i.e., born illegitimately).
