Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Masruq (al-Kindi al-Kufi) is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition); Ibn al-Qattan said that he is not known. Imam al-Dhahabi declared it defective (weak) in the "Talkhis" for this very reason. Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (8/104) but stated no criticism or commendation, while Ibn Hibban included him in "al-Thiqat". Imam al-Dhahabi transmitted in "Mizan al-I'tidal", in the biography of Ishaq bin al-Furat, that Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili declared this hadith weak because of Ishaq bin al-Furat; then al-Dhahabi mentioned that some had criticised him. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajr also declared its chain weak in "Bulugh al-Maram". Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it (10/184) by way of Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain, and said that Sulayman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi is alone in narrating it. Details of the narration: It was recorded by Imam al-Daraqutni (4490), Tammam in "al-Fawa'id" (459, 460), al-Bayhaqi (10/184) and in "al-Ma'rifah" (20086), and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (55/245), through various routes from Sulayman bin Abd al-Rahman. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bayhaqi said in "al-Ma'rifah" that this hadith is "gharib" and that its chain contains narrators who are majhul (unknown).
