It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man who used to give testimony (without verification) was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to me: "O Ibn Abbas, testify only to that which is as clear to you as the light of this sun." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed with his blessed hand towards the sun.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Important point: The words between the square brackets [ ] were not in our manuscripts; we have added them correctly with the help of the other sources of the takhrij.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (extremely weak) and consists of a series of weak narrators; Imam al-Dhahabi declared it "wahi" (very feeble) in the "Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Amr bin Malik al-Rasibi al-Basri is weak and "munkar al-hadith"; indeed, he is also accused of "stealing hadith". His teacher Ibn Mismul is also weak, and the imams listed this hadith among his "manakir" (rejected narrations) in his biography. No narrator other than Ibn Mismul is known to have reported from his shaykh Ubaydullah bin Salamah; weakening (talyin) of him is reported from Abu Hatim, al-Azdi called him "munkar al-hadith", and Ibn al-Madini did not know him at all.
Reference / Source: Ibn Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (6/207) and al-Bayhaqi (10/156) through two routes from Amr bin Malik al-Rasibi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Uqayli narrated it in "al-Du'afa' al-Kabir" (1562) by way of Zayd bin al-Mubarak al-San'ani, and Ibn Adi (6/207) by way of Sulayman al-Shadhakuni; both of them narrate it from Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Mismul.
