It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): Abu Maymunah says that I was sitting with Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) when a Persian woman came to him with her son; her husband had divorced her. Speaking in her Persian language, she said: "O Abu Hurayrah! My husband wants to snatch my son away from me and take him." Meanwhile her husband also came and said: "Who will dispute with me concerning my child?" Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I say nothing about this from myself except what I myself heard: that a woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was sitting there, and she said: 'O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be ransomed for you, my husband wants to take my son away, although he benefits me by bringing me water from the well of Abu Inabah.'" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Draw lots, both of you, over him." The husband said: O Messenger of Allah! Who can dispute with me concerning my son? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the boy: "O boy! This is your father and this is your mother, so take the hand of whichever of them you wish." So the boy took hold of his mother's hand, and she went away with him.
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
