أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الزاهد الأصبهاني، حدثنا أحمد بن محمد بن عيسى القاضي، حدثنا أبو نُعيم وأبو حذيفة، قالا: حدثنا سفيان، عن الحسن بن عمرو، عن محمد بن مسلم بن السائب (1)، عن عبد الله قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "إذا رأيتَ أمَّتي تَهَابُ، فلا تقول للظالم: يا ظالمُ، فقد تُوُدِّعَ منهم" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you see that my Ummah has become afraid (of speaking the truth) and cannot say to the oppressor, 'O oppressor,' then know that they have been bid farewell (that is, they have been deprived of Allah's help and support)."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) هكذا هو في نسخنا الخطية، وهو وهم، فإنَّ محمد بن مسلم هذا هو ابن تَدرُس أبو الزبير المكي، وليس في اسم آبائه: السائب. وجاء على الصواب في مصادر التخريج. وعبد الله هذا الذي روى عنه: هو ابن عمرو بن العاص.
Important point: It is written thus in the manuscripts we have, but this is an error, because this "Muhammad bin Muslim" is actually "Ibn Tadrus Abu al-Zubayr al-Makki", and "al-Sa'ib" is not among the names of his forefathers. In the other referencing sources the name is reported correctly.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "Abd Allah" from whom he narrated is "Abd Allah bin Amr bin al-As".
(2) إسناده ضعيف لانقطاعه، محمد بن مسلم - وهو أبو الزبير المكي - لم يسمع من عبد الله بن عمرو كما قال ابن معين وأبو حاتم وابن عدي، وقد أدخل أبو شهاب الحناط بينهما عمرَو بن شعيب كما سيأتي، وعمرو أيضًا لم يسمع من جدِّ أبيه عبد الله بن عمرو. أبو نعيم: هو الفضل بن دُكين، وأبو حذيفة: هو موسى بن مسعود النهدي، وسفيان: هو الثَّوري.
Grading: Its chain is weak because of "inqita'" (a break in the chain).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Muslim (Abu al-Zubayr al-Makki) did not hear from Abd Allah bin Amr, as Imam Ibn Ma'in, Abu Hatim and Ibn Adi stated explicitly. Abu Shihab al-Hannat inserted "Amr bin Shu'ayb" as an intermediary between them (as will come), while Amr bin Shu'ayb also did not hear from his great-grandfather Abd Allah bin Amr.
Note / Clarification: The details of the narrators in the chain are as follows: Abu Nu'aym is "al-Fadl bin Dukayn", Abu Hudhayfah is "Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi", and Sufyan is "Sufyan al-Thawri".
وأخرجه أبو بكر الشافعي في "الغيلانيات" (634) من طريق أبي حذيفة وحده، عن سفيان الثَّوري، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i narrated it in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (634) via Abu Hudhayfah alone, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 11 / (6776) عن إسحاق بن يوسف الأزرق، والبيهقي في "السنن الكبرى" 6/ 95، وفي "الشعب" (7140) من طريق عبيد الله بن موسى، والحارث بن أبي أسامة كما في "بغية الباحث" (7611)، والعقيلي في "الضعفاء" (1827) من طريق قبيصة بن عقبة، ثلاثتهم عن سفيان الثَّوري، به.
Details of the narration: This narration is also found in these references: Imam Ahmad (11/6776) from Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq; Imam al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/95) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7140) via Ubayd Allah bin Musa; al-Harith bin Abi Usamah as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" (7611); and al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1827) via Qabisah bin Uqbah. All three of these narrators narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri.

وأخرجه ابن عدي في "الكامل" 6/ 123، والبيهقي في "الكبرى" 6/ 95 وفي "الشعب" (7141) من طريق أبي شهاب عبد ربه بن نافع الحناط، عن الحسن بن عمرو. عن أبي الزبير، عن عمرو ابن شعيب، عن جدِّ أبيه عبد الله بن عمرو. وعمرو لم يسمع من أبي جدِّه.
Details of the narration: Ibn Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (6/123), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Kubra" (6/95) and "al-Shu'ab" (7141), via Abu Shihab Abd Rabbih bin Nafi' al-Hannat, from al-Hasan bin Amr, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Amr bin Shu'ayb, from his great-grandfather Abd Allah bin Amr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It should be clear that Amr bin Shu'ayb's hearing from his great-grandfather (Abd Allah bin Amr) is not established.
وأخرجه البزار (2374) من طريق عبيد الله بن عبد الله الربعي، والعقيلي (1826)، والطبراني في "الكبير" (14314) من طريق النَّضر بن إسماعيل، كلاهما عن الحسن بن عمرو، عن مجاهد، عن ابن عمرو. قلنا: عبيد الله الربعي لم نعرفه، والنَّضر ضعيف.
Details of the narration: Imam al-Bazzar narrated it at (2374) via Ubayd Allah bin Abd Allah al-Rib'i, and al-'Uqayli at (1826) and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (14314) via al-Nadr bin Isma'il; both of them narrate from al-Hasan bin Amr, from Mujahid, from Ibn Amr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ubayd Allah al-Rib'i is not known (unidentified), and al-Nadr bin Isma'il is a weak narrator.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الأوسط" (7825)، وابن عدي في 3/ 439 من طريق سنان بن هارون، عن الحسن بن عمرو، عن أبي الزبير، عن جابر، به. فجعله سنان من مسند جابر على الجادة، وسنان هذا ضعيف فكيف وقد خالف!
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (7825) and Ibn Adi (3/439) via Sinan bin Harun, in which he made it, via Abu al-Zubayr, part of the Musnad of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Sinan bin Harun is himself weak, and moreover he has also differed (from the other narrators).
