Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7203

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Maryam (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is made responsible for any affair of the Muslims and then screens himself off from their needs, wants, poverty and destitution (draws a veil over them), Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will screen Himself off on the Day of Resurrection from his need, destitution, want and poverty (that is, He will not hear his call)."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it, and its Syrian chain is sahih.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this name has been changed into "Muhammad", whereas in other places with the author it is mentioned correctly. See this narrator's biography in "Tarikh Baghdad" (5/558) and "Tarikh al-Islam" (6/491).

Grading: This hadith is sahih provided that al-Qasim bin Mukhaymirah's hearing from Abu Maryam, the Companion of the Messenger, is established, for Ibn Ma'in says: "We have not heard that he heard from any Companion."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Maryam is "al-Azdi"; the scholars differ as to whether he is Amr bin Murrah or whether they are two separate people. The author treated them as two separate people and presented the next narration as a supporting report (shahid) for this hadith. For this discussion see Musnad Ahmad (24/15651).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Although Ahmad bin al-Faraj and Baqiyyah bin al-Walid are weak, they have been corroborated (in this narration).
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2948) and al-Tirmidhi (1333) narrated it via Yahya bin Hamzah from Yazid bin Abi Maryam with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (15651) narrated something similar via Abu al-Shammakh al-Azdi from a paternal cousin of his who was a Companion of the Messenger.
