أخبرنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، حدثنا عبد الله بن الحسن بن أحمد الحَرَّاني، حدثنا جَدِّي، حدثنا موسى بن أعيَن، عن بكر بن حُنَيس (1)، عن رجاء بن حَيْوة، عن جُنادة بن أبي أُمية، عن يزيد بن أبي سفيان، قال: قال لي أبو بكر الصِّديِّق حين بعثني إلى الشام: يا يزيدُ إنَّ لك قرابةً عَسَيتَ أن تُؤثرَهم بالإمارة، ذلك أكثرُ ما أخافُ عليك، فقد قال رسول الله ﷺ: "مَنْ وَلِيَ من أمر المسلمين شيئًا، فأمَّرَ عليهم أحدًا محاباةً (2)، فعليه لعنةُ الله، لا يَقبَلُ اللهُ منه صرفًا ولا عَدْلًا حتى يُدخِلَه جهنَّمَ" (3).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to Syria, he said to me: O Yazid! You have some relatives, and perhaps you will give them preference (favouritism) in positions of authority. That is the greatest thing I fear for you, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is made responsible for any affair of the Muslims, and then appoints someone as their leader merely out of partiality and favouritism (muhabatan), upon him is the curse of Allah; Allah will accept from him neither any voluntary deed (sarf) nor any obligatory deed ('adl), until He admits him into Hell."
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) تحرَّف في نسخنا الخطية إلى: حنش.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our manuscripts this word has been distorted (by error) into "Hanash".
(2) المثبت من "مسند أحمد"، وفي نسخنا الخطية: محاماة!
Important point: The text we have established is from "Musnad Ahmad", whereas our manuscripts have (by error) "muhamah" (protection/partisanship)!
(3) إسناده ضعيف لضعف بكر بن خنيس، وبه أعلَّه الذهبي في "تلخيصه".
Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Bakr bin Khunays, and Imam al-Dhahabi also declared it defective for this reason in his "al-Talkhis".
وأخرجه أحمد 1/ (21) من طريق بقية بن الوليد، عن شيخ قرشي، عن رجاء بن حيوة، بهذا الإسناد، مطولًا. وهذا إسناد ضعيف أيضًا لإبهام الشيخ القرشي، وبقية ليس بذاك القوي.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (1/21) narrated it at length via Baqiyyah bin al-Walid from a "Qurashi shaykh" (an unnamed man of Quraysh), from Raja' bin Haywah.
Grading: This chain is also weak because the "Qurashi shaykh" is mubham (unnamed), and Baqiyyah bin al-Walid is also not a very strong narrator.
