أخبرني أبو العباس محمد بن أحمد المحبُوبي بمَرْو، حدثنا سعيد بن مسعود، حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى، حدثنا إسرائيل، عن عمَّار الدُّهْني (3) [عن إسماعيل بن إبراهيم] (4) عن ابنة مَعقِلٍ، عن أبيها قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "ما من أحدٍ يكونُ على شيء من أمور هذه الأمّةِ، قلَّتْ أم كَثُرَتْ، فَلا يَعدِلُ فيهِم إِلَّا أَكبَّه الله في النَّار" (5). هذه أمُّ مَعْقِل بنت مَعقِل بن سِنَان الأشجعي، وهو صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Sinan al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Anyone who is made responsible for anything of the affairs of this Ummah, whether it be little or much, and does not act justly among them, Allah Almighty will throw him face down into the Fire."
This (narrator) is Umm Ma'qil, the daughter of Ma'qil bin Sinan al-Ashja'i, and this hadith is sahih al-isnad (authentic in its chain), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(3) وقع في النسخ الخطية: عامر الدهني، وهو تحريف، والمثبت من "إتحاف المهرة" (16885).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have 'Amir al-Duhni', which is a distortion; the correct name is the one we have recorded according to "Ithaf al-Maharah" (16885).

(5) حديث صحيح، وهذا إسناد مُحتمل للتحسين، إسماعيل بن إبراهيم روى عنه اثنان وذكره البخاري في "التاريخ الكبير" 1/ 339، وابن حبان في "الثقات" 6/ 29، وقد تفرّد بالرواية عن ابنة معقل، ومعقل هو ابن يسار المُزني كما وقع منسوبًا في مصادر التخريج، وليس هو ابن سنان الأشجعي كما قال المصنف، وسمَّى الطبراني ابنة معقل هندًا في الرواية 20/ (517). وأخرجه البخاري في "التاريخ الكبير" 1/ 339، وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" 20/ (519) من طريق إسحاق بن راهويه، كلاهما (البخاري وإسحاق) عن عبيد الله بن موسى، بهذا الإسناد.
Grading: This is a 'sahih' hadith, and its chain can possibly be rated 'hasan'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Two narrators narrated from Isma'il bin Ibrahim; Imam al-Bukhari mentioned him in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/339) and Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" (6/29). He is alone in narrating from 'the daughter of Ma'qil'.
Important point: 'Ma'qil' is Ma'qil bin Yasar al-Muzani, as he is identified in the referencing sources, not Ma'qil bin Sinan al-Ashja'i (as the author mistakenly said). Imam al-Tabarani named Ma'qil's daughter 'Hind' in the narration (20/517).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir", and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (20/519) via Ishaq bin Rahawayh, from Ubayd Allah bin Musa with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 33 / (20290) و (20296) من طريق إسماعيل بن أبي خالد، عن إسماعيل بن إبراهيم، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/20290 and 20296) narrated it via Isma'il bin Abi Khalid from Isma'il bin Ibrahim.
وأخرجه بنحوه أحمد (20291)، والبخاري (7150) و (7151)، ومسلم (142) (227) و (229) و (1829) (21) من طريق الحسن البصري، عن معقل بن يسار بلفظ: "ما من عبدٍ استرعاه الله رعية فلم يحطها بنصيحة إلّا لم يجد رائحة الجنة".
Reference / Source: A narration of similar meaning was reported by Imam Ahmad (20291), al-Bukhari (7150, 7151) and Muslim (142, 1829 etc.) via al-Hasan al-Basri from Ma'qil bin Yasar with these words: "There is no servant whom Allah places in charge of a flock and who does not guard them with sincere care, but he will not even find the fragrance of Paradise."
وأخرجه مسلم (142) و (1829) (22) من طريق أبي المَليح: أنَّ عبيد الله بن زياد دخل على معقل بن يسار، فذكره بنحو سابقه.
Details of the narration: Imam Muslim (142, 1829) narrated it via Abu al-Malih: Ubayd Allah bin Ziyad visited Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) (during his illness), and he narrated the hadith like the previous narration.
وأخرجه أحمد (20289)، ومسلم (1829) (22) من طريق أبي الأسود، عن معقل بن يسار، به. ولفظه: "أيُّما راع استُرعيَ رعية، فغشَّها، فهو في النار".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (20289) and Muslim (1829) narrated it via Abu al-Aswad from Ma'qil bin Yasar with these words: "Any shepherd who is placed in charge of a flock and deceives them will be in the Fire."
