It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever climbs the mountain pass of al-Murar (or al-Marar), his sins will fall away from him just as the sins of the Children of Israel fell away." The first to climb it were our horses, the horses of Banu Khazraj. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All of you have been forgiven except the owner of the red camel." The narrator says: He was a Bedouin searching for his lost animal. We said to him: Come, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will seek forgiveness for you. But he said: Finding my lost animal is dearer to me than your companion (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) seeking forgiveness for me.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "qawi" (strong). Important point: Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad is "Abu Qilabah al-Raqashi", and Abu Amir al-Aqadi is "Abd al-Malik bin Amr al-Qaysi". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Muslim (2780) with the chain Ubaydullah bin Mu'adh al-Anbari, from his father (Mu'adh bin Mu'adh), from Qurrah bin Khalid, with this chain. Note / Clarification: Al-Hakim's including this narration as an addition (istidrak) is an "oversight" (dhuhul) on his part, since it is already in Sahih Muslim. Reference / Source: Khidash bin Ayyash narrated it (with al-Tirmidhi (3863)) with the chain Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All those who pledged allegiance under the tree will enter Paradise, except the owner of the red camel." Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it "gharib". In this narration the story of the owner of the red camel is placed at the Pledge of Ridwan at al-Hudaybiyah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Only three people narrated from the narrator "Khidash"; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", while al-Tirmidhi said: We do not know him. Reference / Source: Al-Layth bin Sa'd narrated it (with Ahmad 23/ (14778), Abu Dawud (4653), al-Tirmidhi (3860), al-Nasa'i (11444) and Ibn Hibban (4802)) with the chain Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, in these words: "None of those who pledged allegiance under the tree will enter the Fire." Important point: In this (more reliable) narration there is no mention of the owner of the camel. 23/ (15262). Reference / Source: Abu Sufyan (Talhah bin Nafi') narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu' in these words: "No man who witnessed Badr and al-Hudaybiyah will ever enter the Fire." It was narrated by Ahmad 23/ (15262). Note / Clarification: Concerning the word "al-murar", al-Nawawi said in "Sharh Muslim" (17/ 126): In the first narration it is "al-murar" (with dammah on the mim and a light ra'), in the second it is with dammah or fathah on the mim (with doubt), and in some copies with dammah or kasrah. Important point: "Al-murar" is the name of a bitter tree, and "thaniyyah" originally means a path between two mountains; this particular path was near al-Hudaybiyah.
