(4). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Akwa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that Amir bin al-Tufayl did not enter Madinah without a guarantee of safety from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Amir, whoever embraces Islam remains safe." He said: Yes, on the condition that the desert and Bedouin lands (al-wabar) are mine and the towns and settled lands (al-madar) are yours. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That cannot be. O Amir, embrace Islam and you will be safe." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go, until we consider your matter tomorrow." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for the Ansar and asked: "What is your opinion? I have invited this man, but he refuses to embrace Islam unless the desert is under his rule and the towns under mine." They said: Whatever Allah wills and then whatever you will, O Messenger of Allah! Whenever they took from us in war a single camel-hobbling rope ('iqal), we took two from them in return. Allah and His Messenger know best. The next day Amir came again to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "O Amir, will you embrace Islam?" He said: No, unless the desert is mine and the towns are yours. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there no other way besides that?" But he insisted that the lands of tents be his and the lands of mud houses be the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to accept his condition. Amir said in anger: Know that, by Allah, I will fill Madinah against you with horsemen and foot soldiers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Allah Almighty will not let that happen, nor will the sons of Qaylah, that is, Aws and Khazraj." Then, when Amir turned his back and left, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated: 'Allahumma ikfinihi' (O Allah, suffice me against him). So Allah Almighty afflicted him, before he reached his home, with a severe inflammation of the throat, or diphtheria (al-dhubahah). When this illness struck him, he cried out: O family of Amir! A swelling like the swelling of a camel has come out! And he perished at that very moment, before reaching his home.

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is that Ali bin Yazid and his father are "majhul" (unknown). Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 8/ 326-327 from (Abdullah bin al-Zubayr) al-Humaydi, with this chain. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari narrated in his "Sahih" (4091) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his (Anas's) maternal uncle (Haram bin Milhan, the brother of Umm Sulaym) with seventy riders. The chief of the polytheists, Amir bin al-Tufayl, (had offered the Prophet a choice of three things, and later) died on the back of his horse after being struck by a plague swelling. Details of the narration: At his death Amir bin al-Tufayl said: "A swelling like the swelling of a young camel, and in the house of a woman of the family of so-and-so!" Details of the narration: While Haram bin Milhan (may Allah be pleased with him) was conveying the message, one of the polytheists struck him with a spear from behind and killed him. He said: "Allahu akbar! By the Lord of the Ka'bah, I have succeeded." On this occasion a verse was revealed that was later abrogated: "We have met our Lord; He is pleased with us and has made us pleased." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked Allah against the tribes of Ri'l, Dhakwan, Banu Lihyan and Usayyah for thirty mornings.
