Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7155

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was inspecting horses, and Uyaynah bin Badr al-Fazari was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "I know horses better than you do." Uyaynah said: And I know men better than you do. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Then who are the best of men?" He said: Men who carry their swords on their shoulders and rest their spears on the withers of their horses, and who are of the people of Najd. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are wrong. Rather, the best of men are the men of Yemen. Faith is Yemeni, extending to Lakhm and Judham (tribes). The ma'kul of Himyar (the one whose right is devoured) is better than its akil (the one who devours the right), and the people of Hadramawt are better than Banu al-Harith. By Allah, I would not care if both Harith (tribes) perished. May Allah Almighty curse the four kings: Jamd, Mikhwas, Mishrah and Abda'ah, and their sister al-Amarradah." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Lord commanded me to curse Quraysh twice, so I cursed them; and He commanded me to pray (for mercy) for them twice, so I prayed for them twice." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty curse Tamim bin Murr and Bakr bin Wa'il" — he (peace and blessings be upon him) said this seven times — and he said: "May Allah Almighty curse two tribes of Banu Tamim, Muqa'is and Muladis." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The tribe of Usayyah has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger, except for (the clans of) Qays, Ja'dah and Ismah." Then he said: "Aslam, Ghifar, Muzaynah and those of Juhaynah joined with them will be better in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection than Banu Asad, Tamim, Ghatafan and Hawazin." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The two worst tribes among the Arabs are Najran and Banu Taghlib, and the tribe with the greatest numbers in Paradise will be the tribe of Madhhij."
This hadith is gharib (unusual) in its text, but its chain is sahih (authentic); however, the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word here was distorted into "Abd"; we have corrected it in light of the sources.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "wa-khtilafihim", while manuscripts (M) and (S) have "wa-ahlafihim" (their allies); what we have established is from the sources of the takhrij.

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but in the text the repeated cursing of Quraysh, Banu Tamim, Banu Bakr and others contains "nakarah" (munkar, objectionable content).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakim himself also declared the text of this narration "strange" after it. In the chain Mu'awiyah bin Salih (Ibn Hudayr) narrates from Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh, but Afiyah bin Ayyub al-Misri contradicted him and mentioned "Shurayh bin Ubayd" as an intermediary between them. Moreover, Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh used to practise "irsal" and did not state explicitly that he heard from Amr bin Abasah. Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 34/ 454 reported (from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Isa al-Baghdadi, author of "Tarikh al-Himsiyyin") the Companions whom Ibn A'idh met, but the name of Amr bin Abasah is not among them (and Allah knows best).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2040) by way of Afiyah bin Ayyub al-Misri, from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from Shurayh bin Ubayd, from Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh, from Amr, as marfu': "The tribe with the most (people) in Paradise will be Madhhij."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain Shurayh bin Ubayd is added, but its chain is weak.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (32/ 19446) and al-Nasa'i (8293) with the chain Safwan bin Amr, from Shurayh bin Ubayd, from Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh al-Azdi. The narration of al-Nasa'i is abridged, mentioning only the tribe of Madhhij.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (19442) narrated it in abridged form with the chain Uthman bin Ubayd (Abu Daws al-Yahsubi), from Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh, with these words: "The two worst tribes among the Arabs are Najran and Banu Taghlib."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (19450) narrated it (in abridged form) by way of Yazid bin Yazid bin Jabir, from a man, from Amr bin Abasah; but in it there is an "unnamed" (mubham) narrator, and this narration is not free from a break in the chain either.
Reference / Source: It was narrated (in full and in parts) by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/ 248-249), Ibn Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah", Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh", Ibn Abi Khaythamah, Ibn Abi Asim and al-Tahawi by various routes from Jubayr bin Nufayr, from Amr bin Abasah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jubayr bin Nufayr used to practise "irsal", and his hearing from Amr bin Abasah is not established; al-Bukhari too, in his "Tarikh", did not mention Amr bin Abasah in the list of those he heard from.
Details of the narration: On this topic there is the narration of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that Uyaynah bin Hisn said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I know men better than you do." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have lied. The best of men are the people of Yemen; faith is Yemeni, and the tribe with the most (people) in Paradise will be Madhhij (the hadith continues); may Allah curse the four kings (Jamd, Mishrah, Mikhwas and Abda'ah) and their sister al-Amarradah."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Kabir" (20/ 192) with the chain Khalid bin Ma'dan, from Mu'adh, but because Khalid did not hear from Mu'adh, this chain is "munqati'" (broken).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement "Faith is Yemeni" is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah found in Sahih al-Bukhari (3499) and Sahih Muslim (52).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement that "(the tribe of) Usayyah disobeyed Allah and His Messenger", supporting reports are in the narrations of Anas and Ibn Umar (al-Bukhari 2814, 3513 and Muslim 677, 2518). This narration will also come from Salamah bin al-Akwa' under number (7158).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Concerning the merit of the tribes of Aslam, Ghifar, Muzaynah and (their confederates from) Juhaynah (that they are better than Asad, Tamim, Ghatafan and others), there is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari (3528) and Muslim (2521).
Important point: Benefit: the four kings who are cursed in this report, according to Ibn Sa'd (al-Tabaqat 7/ 13), came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with al-Ash'ath bin Qays, accepted Islam, but later apostatised and were killed on the "Day of al-Nujayr". They were called "kings" because each of them was the independent owner of his own valley. Ibn Hazm also mentioned them in "Jamharat Ansab al-Arab" p. 428.
Note / Clarification: "Al-Nujayr" was an impregnable fortress in Yemen near Hadramawt, where al-Ash'ath bin Qays and other apostates took refuge at the time of the apostasy. In the time of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Ziyad bin Labid al-Bayadi besieged and conquered it and took al-Ash'ath bin Qays captive (12 AH).
Note / Clarification: "Manasij" is the plural of minsaj; it is the part of a horse's body that corresponds to the shoulders (kahil) of a human.
Note / Clarification: Lakhm and Judham are two well-known tribes of Yemen. "Ma'kul Himyar" means their dead, whom the earth has consumed.
Note / Clarification: "Akiluha" (those who consume it) means their living people.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): By "al-Harithan" apparently Hadramawt and Banu al-Harith are meant, who were given a single name by way of predominance (taghlib). And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: "Jamd" (with sukun or fathah on the mim) was one of the kings of Kindah, whose name was Jamd bin Ma'dikarib.
Note / Clarification: "Mikhwas" (with kasrah on the mim and sukun on the kha') was one of the kings. The author (al-Hakim) did not mention the fourth brother, "Mishrah", which is pronounced like Mikhwas.
Note / Clarification: "Abda'ah" is pronounced with fathah on the hamzah and sukun on the ba', while their sister's name is "al-Amarradah", read with fathah on all the letters and a shaddah on the ra'.
