Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7081

It is narrated from Sayyidah Hamnah bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) that when she was told that her brother had been martyred, she said: May Allah have mercy on him. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return). Then she was told that her maternal uncle Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) had been martyred, and she said: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Then when she was told that her husband had been martyred, she said (in anguish): "Oh, what grief! (Wa harbah)" Seeing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, the husband has a place in a woman's heart that no one else has."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word is written with dots as "wa huznah" (from huzn, grief), but al-Zabidi said in "Taj al-'Arus" 2/ 252 that the word is actually "wa harabah", which the Arabs use generally in situations of grief and sorrow, just as "wa asafa" is said.
Note / Clarification: (Meaning of the verse): "Alas for the anguish of my heart! Will this anguish be of any help as a rescue? And O ruin (wa haraba)! If only this lament could be of some benefit."
Note / Clarification: The background of this word is given as follows: when someone died, "Harb bin Umayyah" would take on the responsibility for the maintenance, clothing and all the expenses of his family, so that the family felt only the absence of the deceased's voice and their grief was lightened. When Harb himself died, the people of Makkah lamented him by saying "wa harbah" (with sukun on the ra'), and later "wa haraba" (with fathah on the ra') became current. Al-Fakihi wrote in "Akhbar Makkah" 3/ 218 that this phrase was first said for Harb bin Umayyah, and the wailing women took the word from it.
Note / Clarification: After mentioning the story of Harb bin Umayyah, Ibn Sidah said in "al-Muhkam": I do not like this (i.e. it does not seem academically strong); his view is that it comes from "harab", which means a man being robbed of the wealth on which his livelihood depends.

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is the weakness of Ishaq al-Farwi and Abdullah bin 'Umar (who is Ibn Hafs al-'Umari).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it at 4/ 66 via Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, who transmitted it from both Ahmad bin 'Ubayd bin Ibrahim and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Hamdan al-Jallab, who (both) narrated it from Ibrahim bin al-Husayn with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it in brief in "al-Asma' al-Mubhamah" 7/ 500 via Muhammad bin Isma'il, from Ishaq al-Farwi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah narrated this narration at (1590) through Muhammad bin Yahya, from Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi, from Abdullah bin 'Umar (al-'Umari), from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Jahsh.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar" is not mentioned in this chain.
Details of the narration: Ibn Sa'd narrated it at 10/ 229 through both Khalid bin Makhlad al-Bajali and al-Waqidi (Muhammad bin 'Umar); both narrate from Abdullah bin 'Umar, from Abdullah bin Ibrahim, from his father, from Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Jahsh, that: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Uhud, the women stood asking people about their family members" (and he mentioned a similar narration). Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) added in his hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her (Hamnah bint Jahsh): "Why did you say about Mus'ab (bin 'Umayr) what you did not say about anyone else?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah! I remembered the orphanhood of his children."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration Abdullah bin 'Umar al-'Umari mentioned the name "Abdullah bin Ibrahim" in place of his brother 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar, and we could not find a biography (tarjamah) of him (Abdullah bin Ibrahim).
Reference / Source: A similar narration was reported by 'Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" 1/ 319 via Ma'mar, from "al-Jahshi", that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hamnah bint Jahsh (and he mentioned it).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This "al-Jahshi" is Sa'id bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jahsh, and as mentioned in "Taqrib al-Tahdhib" he is among the junior Successors; on this basis this narration of his is "mursal".
