Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7072

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when my sister opened (the door) for me, I said: "O enemy of your own self! Have you abandoned your religion?" She said something (in reply), and then she said: "O son of al-Khattab! Do whatever you intend to do, for I have already accepted Islam." Umar says: Then I went in and sat on the couch, and suddenly I saw a written sheet in the middle of the house. I asked: "What is this sheet doing here?" She said: "O son of al-Khattab! Leave us alone. You neither take the ritual bath after major impurity (janabah) nor purify yourself, whereas this may be touched only by those who are pure."
Mention of Sayyidah Asma' bint Sa'id bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl, who is the daughter of Sayyidah Fatimah bint al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with her).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak; Ishaq al-Hunayni and Usamah bin Zayd are both weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And (the name of) Usamah's grandfather "Aslam" has dropped from the author's narration. Al-Dhahabi pointed to this in "al-Talkhis", saying: "Something has dropped from it, and it is wahin (very weak) and munqati' (broken)." We say: This name is established (present) in the sources of takhrij.
Reference / Source: And al-Bayhaqi mentioned it at length in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 217-220 via Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Ibrahim, from Abu al-Walid Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Burd al-Antaki, from Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Hunayni, from Usamah bin Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Reference / Source: And it was narrated, at length and in brief, by Abdullah bin Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (376 and 377), al-Bazzar in "al-Musnad" (279), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1347), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7790) and "al-Hilyah" 1/ 41, Qawam al-Sunnah al-Asbahani in "Siyar al-Salaf" pp. 94-97, and Ibn 'Asakir in his "Tarikh" 44/ 31-33, via various routes from Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Hunayni, from Usamah bin Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather Aslam.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the words "from his grandfather" have dropped from the second narration of Abdullah (bin Ahmad).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bazzar said: "We do not know anyone who narrated this hadith from Usamah bin Zayd, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Umar, except Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Hunayni; and we do not know of any chain narrated for the story of 'Umar's acceptance of Islam better than this chain, although we have mentioned that when al-Hunayni left Madinah he became blind and his hadith became mudtarib (inconsistent)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is also a narration from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which Abu Nu'aym mentioned in "al-Ma'rifah" (7789), but its chain is very weak.
