Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7071

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from Banu Zuhrah met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) before he accepted Islam, while he was going along with a sword hung at his side. He asked: O Umar! Where are you headed? He said: I intend to kill Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: Shall I not tell you something astonishing? Your brother-in-law Sa'id and your sister have turned away from their religion and abandoned the religion they were upon. Hearing this, Umar set off towards them, filled with rage. When he came near the door, there was a man with them named Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), who was teaching them Surah Ta-Ha. When Khabbab sensed the sound of Umar, he hid under their bed. Umar entered and asked: What was this murmuring that I heard with you? They both replied: It was only something we were talking about between ourselves. Umar said: Perhaps you two have turned away from your religion and abandoned what you were upon before. Then his brother-in-law Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Umar! What do you think if the truth lies somewhere other than in your religion? Hearing this, he fell upon his brother-in-law and beat him severely. His sister tried to save her husband from him, so he struck her on the face, which made her face bleed. His sister said (with great courage): What do you think if the truth lies somewhere other than in your religion? I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The narrator says: Seeing this, Umar fell silent. Then his sister said: Get up and take a ritual bath (ghusl) or perform ablution (wudu).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts this was distorted into "أراك"; the correction was made from the sources of takhrij.

Grading: (2) Its chain is weak. About al-Qasim bin 'Uthman al-Bukhari said: He has some hadiths in which he is not corroborated. Al-Daraqutni said after this hadith of his in "al-Sunan": He is not strong. Al-'Uqayli said in "al-Du'afa'" 3/ 383: He is not corroborated in his hadith; Ishaq al-Azraq narrated from him hadiths in which he is not corroborated. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and said: He sometimes made mistakes.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it, at length and in brief, in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" 3/ 248, Ibn Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" 2/ 657-659, al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (1860), al-Daraqutni in "al-Sunan" (441), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 1/ 88 and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 2/ 219-220, and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (7/ 2573), via various routes from Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani said: It is narrated from Anas only with this chain; al-Qasim is alone in narrating it.
Note / Clarification: The word "dhamiran" means: threatening, as in Ibn al-Athir's "al-Nihayah" (root: dh-m-r).
