It is narrated from Kurayb bin Sulayman al-Kindi, who said: Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn bin Ali (Imam Zayn al-Abidin) took me by the hand and led me to a man of Quraysh from the clan of Banu Zuhrah who was called Ibn Abi Hathmah. He was praying nearby, and when he finished his prayer he turned towards us. Sayyiduna Ali bin al-Husayn said to him: Narrate the hadith that you heard from your mother about ruqyah. He said: Yes. My mother told me that she used to perform a ruqyah in the days of Jahiliyyah, and when Islam came she said: I will not perform ruqyah until I seek permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Perform ruqyah, as long as there is nothing in it that associates partners with Allah, the Mighty and Majestic (shirk)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name occurs as "Ibn Sulayman", whereas in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (7/ 169) and "Thiqat Ibn Hibban" (5/ 339) the correct name is recorded as Ibn Sulaym.
Grading: Sahih li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting evidence). Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain except Kurayb bin Sulaym al-Kindi, for he is "majhul", and al-Jarrah bin al-Dahhak is alone in narrating from him. Imam al-Bukhari (7/ 231) and Ibn Abi Hatim (7/ 169) mentioned him and remained silent, while Ibn Hibban counted him in "al-Thiqat". Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "Ibn Abi Hathmah" from whom Kurayb narrates is attributed by the author to "Banu Zuhrah", but this specification is not found with any other hadith scholar. According to the biographical works he is an 'Adawi, not a Zuhri. Ibn Abi Hatim identified him as the same "Abu Bakr bin Sulayman" who appeared in the previous hadith; in that case "my mother" mentioned in the narration would mean his grandmother al-Shifa' bint Abdullah, since it was the custom of the Arabs to call a grandmother "mother". But al-Hafiz Ibn 'Asakir mentioned it in the biography of Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah, the father of Abu Bakr, which is closer to the context of the hadith; on this view al-Shifa' would be his actual mother, not his grandmother. And Allah knows best. Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'id narrated it in his "Amali" (13), and via him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (22/ 213-214), via Muhammad bin Yazid al-'Ijli. Also Ibn Hibban (6092) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (24/ 796) narrated it via Muhammad bin al-'Ala' bin Kurayb; both of them narrate it from Ishaq bin Sulayman with this same chain. (2200). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of 'Awf bin Malik, which is in Sahih Muslim (2200), is a shahid for the statement "Perform ruqyah as long as there is no shirk in it".
