(2) (3). It is narrated from Sayyidah al-Shifa' bint Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to perform some ruqyahs in the days of Jahiliyyah. She had pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah before the Hijrah, then she came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) as an emigrant and said: O Messenger of Allah! I used to perform some ruqyahs in the Jahiliyyah, and I intend to present them to you (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Present them." So she recited those words to him (peace and blessings be upon him), among which was the ruqyah for "namlah" (a kind of skin sore). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Perform ruqyah with it, and teach it to Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) as well." (The words were:) 'Bismillah, salawa sulbu jabr, ta'awwudhan min afwahiha, wa la tadurru ahadan, Allahumma ikshif al-ba's rabb al-nas' (In the name of Allah, the prayers of the back of Jabr (a person so named; meaning healing), seeking refuge from their (the sores') mouths, and may it harm no one; O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction). Sayyidah al-Shifa' (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that she would recite this ruqyah seven times over a stick of turmeric and put it in a clean place, then rub it on a stone and apply it as a paste on those sores.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
303. Note / Clarification: (1) In the manuscripts it was distorted into "صلوت حين يعود"; the correct word is "salawan", as established in the books on the Companions (al-Isti'ab, Usd al-Ghabah, al-Isabah). Abu Nu'aym wrote it as "صلق صلب", which is a distortion. Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Salawan" refers to the hip bones (singular: sala); it is the place between the edge of the buttock and the tailbone, on the right and left sides.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" and "al-Isti'ab" (p. 915), after the word "hajar" (stone), there is this addition: "بِخَلِّ خَمْرٍ ثَقِيفٍ" (with thaqif wine vinegar, i.e. vinegar that is very sour).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In the manuscripts this was distorted into "al-nurah", and what we have recorded is taken from the aforementioned sources.
Grading: (3) It is sahih li-ghayrihi (on the strength of supporting reports) except for the words about the "ruqyah" (incantation), because 'Uthman bin 'Umar al-Hathmi is alone in narrating them; Ibn Ma'in said about him: "I do not know him", and Ibn 'Adi said: "He is majhul". Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7708) via al-Hasan bin Sufyan, from Ibrahim bin Abdullah al-Harawi, from 'Uthman bin 'Umar bin 'Uthman bin Sulayman bin Abi Hathmah al-'Adawi, (who said): My father 'Umar bin 'Uthman narrated to me from his father, from al-Shifa'. The link of his grandfather Sulayman is not in it.
