Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih, but the statement in it that "a single bath is more complete than wudu" is actually the words of Hisham bin 'Urwah (i.e. the statement of a Successor); it is not a marfu' hadith, as Yahya al-Qattan made clear in his narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the hadith scholars who recorded this hadith named the woman "Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh", not "bint Qays" as it occurs with the author (al-Hakim).
Reference / Source: Muslim (333) (62) and Ibn Majah (621) narrated it via Abdullah bin al-Jarrah, and al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (217) via various routes from Hammad bin Zayd, with this same chain. Muslim and Ibn Majah did not quote the wording of Hammad bin Zayd's narration. Muslim said: In the hadith of Hammad bin Zayd there is an additional word which we have omitted.
Details of the narration: In al-Nasa'i's narration the words "a single bath is more complete" are not present, and with him Fatimah's lineage is given as "bint Abi Hubaysh". After it al-Nasa'i said: I do not know anyone other than Hammad bin Zayd who mentioned "and perform wudu" (in place of bathing) in this hadith, while several people narrated it from Hisham and did not mention "and perform wudu" in it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ahmad 42/ (25622) narrated it from Yahya al-Qattan; al-Bukhari (306) and Ibn Hibban (1350) via Imam Malik; al-Bukhari (331) and Abu Dawud (282) via Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah; al-Bukhari (320) via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah; Ahmad (25622), Muslim (333), al-Tirmidhi (125) and al-Nasa'i (al-Mujtaba: 212, 359) via Waki' bin al-Jarrah; al-Tirmidhi (125) and al-Nasa'i (212, 359) via 'Abdah bin Sulayman; Muslim (333) (62) via Abdullah bin Numayr, Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid and 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Muhammad (al-Darawardi); and al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (218) via Khalid bin al-Harith. All of these are narrated via Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah: that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! I do not become pure; shall I abandon the prayer? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is only (the blood of) a vein, not menstruation. When the days of menstruation come, leave the prayer, and when they have passed, wash the blood from yourself and pray." In Ahmad's narration Yahya al-Qattan says: I asked Hisham: Is she to take a single bath and perform wudu at the time of every prayer? He said: Yes!
Grading: Imam al-Nasa'i says: The narration of Imam Malik, which he transmits via Hisham, from his father, from 'A'ishah, is the most authentic of all the narrations reported in the chapter on the woman with istihadah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (228), Muslim (333) (62) and al-Tirmidhi (125) narrated it via Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir, from Hisham, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Al-Bukhari and al-Tirmidhi transmitted from Hisham the addition in it that his father 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr said concerning this: "Perform wudu for every prayer until that (menstruation) time comes again."
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1354) narrated it via Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, with this same chain: that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I have istihadah for a month or two months. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is not menstruation, rather it is a vein. When menstruation comes, leave the prayer for as many days as you used to menstruate, then when those days have passed, bathe and perform wudu for every prayer."
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1355) narrated it via Abu 'Awanah (al-Waddah bin Abdullah al-Yashkuri), from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about the woman with istihadah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She should leave the prayer during her (menstruation) days, then bathe once, then perform wudu at the time of every prayer."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The addition "wudu for every prayer" also occurs in the narrations of Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, Yahya bin Hashim, Imam Abu Hanifah and Hammad bin Salamah from Hisham bin 'Urwah. For details of their narrations see the takhrij of hadith no. (25621) of "Musnad Ahmad".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This addition also occurs in the narration of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr that is reported by a route other than that of his son Hisham. Thus Ahmad 40/ (24145), Abu Dawud (298) and Ibn Majah (624) narrated it via Sulayman bin Mihran al-A'mash, from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh said: O Messenger of Allah! I suffer from istihadah and do not become pure; shall I leave the prayer? He said: "No, that is only a vein, not menstruation. Keep away from the prayer during the days of your menstruation, then bathe and perform wudu for every prayer, even if the blood drips onto the mat."
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (286), al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (215) and al-Hakim (627) narrated it via Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Ibn Abi 'Adi (Muhammad bin Ibrahim), from Muhammad bin 'Amr (bin 'Alqamah), from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh: that she used to have istihadah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "When it is the blood of menstruation, it is black blood that is recognised; when that is so, refrain from the prayer, and when it is the other (the blood of istihadah), perform wudu and pray, for it is only (the blood of) a vein." Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i say that Ibn Abi 'Adi narrated it thus from his book.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Then Ibn Abi 'Adi narrated it from his memory and said: Muhammad bin 'Amr narrated to us via Ibn Shihab, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah (i.e. he made it part of the Musnad of 'A'ishah). Abu Dawud narrated it thus after (286), al-Nasa'i in "al-Kubra" (216), and Ibn Hibban at (1348).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (1/ 325) narrated it via Imam Ahmad, from Muhammad bin Abi 'Adi, from Muhammad bin 'Amr, from Ibn Shihab, from 'Urwah: that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh (and he mentioned the full hadith).
Note / Clarification: Abdullah bin Ahmad says: I heard my father (Imam Ahmad) say: Ibn Abi 'Adi first narrated this hadith to us from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), then he abandoned that (i.e. the mention of 'A'ishah).
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (792) narrated it via Khalaf bin Salim, from Muhammad bin Abi 'Adi, from Muhammad bin 'Amr, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh.
Grading: Imam Abu Hatim said (as his son transmitted in "al-'Ilal" (117)): No one corroborated Muhammad bin 'Amr in this narration, and it is "munkar".
Reference / Source: Khalid bin Abdullah (al-Wasiti) narrated it from Suhayl bin Abi Salih (as in Abu Dawud: 296, and with the author himself at hadith no. 628, which has passed, and the wording is his), from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from Asma' bint 'Umays: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh has had istihadah for such-and-such a time and has not prayed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Subhan Allah! This is from Satan. Let her sit in a tub (mirkan); then when she sees yellowness over the water, let her take one bath for Zuhr and 'Asr, one bath for Maghrib and 'Isha', and a separate bath for Fajr, and perform wudu (for the prayers) in between." By this route it is made part of the "Musnad of Asma' bint 'Umays".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid narrated it, in Abu Dawud (281), from Suhayl bin Abi Salih, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr; 'Urwah says: Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh told me that she instructed Asma', or (said with doubt) Asma' told me that Fatimah bint Abi Hubaysh instructed her to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Important point: This makes clear that the doubt was on the part of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr himself.
