Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name has been corrupted into "Ibrahim".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the handwritten manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Farwah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the handwritten manuscripts this word had been corrupted into "Bari'", whereas the correct form is "Fari'" (with the letter fa').
Reference / Source: According to "Marasid al-Ittila'" (3/1013) it is the name of one of the fortresses (atam) of Madinah. Abu 'Ubayd al-Bakri wrote in "Mu'jam ma Ista'jam" (3/1013) that "Fari'" (on the pattern fa'il) was the fortress of Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: "Utum" (with a dammah or sukun on the ta') means a fortress or an elevated house; its plural is "atam" and "utum".
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi", although this particular chain of it is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi is "layyin al-hadith" (weak), and the female narrator Umm 'Urwah bint Ja'far is "unknown". A group narrated from Ja'far (bin al-Zubayr), as Ibn Hajar mentioned in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib", and Ibn Hibban listed him in his "al-Thiqat".
Important point: The mention of "the Battle of Uhud" in this narration is a "wahm" (error); the correct view is that this incident took place during "the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq)", as al-Hafiz Ibn 'Asakir pointed out in "Tarikh Dimashq" (12/429) and al-Dhahabi in "al-Siyar" (2/522).
Details of the narration: Ibn Mandah narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (p. 934), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7493) and (7720), and Ibn 'Asakir (12/429), through various routes from Isma'il bin Ishaq al-Qadi, from Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: With Abu Nu'aym alone the wording is, with doubt: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to Uhud or al-Khandaq."
Details of the narration: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in the second volume of his "Tarikh" (3348) and (3971 M) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir 12/430), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 24/(809) and "al-Awsat" (3754), and Ibn 'Asakir (12/429), through various routes from Ishaq al-Farwi, from Umm 'Urwah, from her father Ja'far, from Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) is not mentioned in it. Al-Tabarani said: This hadith is narrated from Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) only with this chain, and Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi is alone in narrating it.
Details of the narration: Al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (978) narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Shabib, from Ishaq al-Farwi, from Umm 'Urwah bint Ja'far bin al-Zubayr, from her father, from her grandfather al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him), and so made it part of the "Musnad of al-Zubayr".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bazzar said: To our knowledge this hadith is not narrated from al-Zubayr except by this route with this chain. We say: 'Abd Allah bin Shabib is "dhahib al-hadith" (utterly unreliable in hadith) and cannot be relied upon as proof.
Details of the narration: Abu Ya'la (683) and Ibn 'Asakir (12/429-430) narrated it by way of Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zabalah, from Umm 'Urwah, from her father, from her grandfather al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left his women behind in Madinah, he left them in (the fortress of) 'Fari'', and among them was Safiyyah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her), and he left Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) with them. A man from the polytheists came forward to enter upon them, so Safiyyah said to Hassan: 'The man is yours to deal with', but Hassan lost his nerve and refused. So Safiyyah took the sword and struck the polytheist with it until she killed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of that, and he allotted Safiyyah a share (of the spoils) just as he allotted to the men."
Grading: He made this too part of the Musnad of al-Zubayr; but Ibn Zabalah is "muttaham bi al-kadhib" (accused of lying), and his narration is of no value.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham in "al-Sirah" (2/228), al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (2/577), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Kubra" (6/308) and "al-Dala'il" (3/442-443) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir 12/431) narrated this lengthy story by way of Ibn Ishaq, from Yahya bin 'Abbad bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr, from his father 'Abbad.
Grading: This chain is "la ba'sa bihi" (acceptable), but 'Abbad bin 'Abd Allah is a Successor (tabi'i), so this narration is "mursal".
