Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7040

Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father, and he from Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her). Urwah heard her say: "I am the first woman who killed a man. I was in Hassan bin Thabit's fortress 'Fari'', and when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dug the trench, Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us among the women and children." Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) related: "A Jew passed by us and began circling the fortress, so I said to Hassan: 'This Jew is circling the fortress, as you can see, and I fear that he will inform (the enemy) of our weak points, while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions are occupied (in battle); so get up and kill him.'" Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O daughter of Abdul Muttalib! May Allah forgive you. By Allah! You know that I am not the man for this task." Sayyidah Safiyyah says: "When he said that and I saw no (means of defence) in him, I tightened my waist-wrapper, took up a post of the fortress, went down, and struck that Jew with it again and again until I killed him. Then I came back into the fortress and said: 'O Hassan! Go down and strip him of his belongings (as spoils); nothing prevented me from stripping him except that he was a strange man.'" He said: "I have no need of his belongings."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
An account of Sayyidah Arwa bint Abdul Muttalib, the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); I have not found mention of her acceptance of Islam anywhere except in the book of Abu Abdullah al-Waqidi.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "Muhammad".

Note / Clarification: Manuscript (Z) has the word "astalibuhu" (that I strip him of his belongings).

Grading: This is "hasan li-ghayrihi", and there is no harm in its narrators.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr's explicit statement that he heard it from Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) is a "wahm" (error); probably this error came from Yunus bin Bukayr, since there is criticism of Yunus, while others narrated it without stating the hearing explicitly.
Important point: Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": 'Urwah did not meet Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her). In "al-Siyar" (2/271) he said that Safiyyah died in the year 20 AH, whereas 'Urwah was born three or more years after that (so the break in the chain is clear).
Details of the narration: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Sunan" (6/308) and "al-Dala'il" (3/443) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this chain. In "al-Dala'il" he paired Ahmad bin al-Hasan al-Qadi with al-Hakim, but did not give his wording.
Note / Clarification: He said: And he added in it: "She was the first woman to kill a man from the polytheists."
Details of the narration: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (10/41) from Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 24/(804) by way of Hammad bin Salamah; both of them from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father 'Urwah, as "mursal".
Grading: Its chain up to 'Urwah is "sahih".
Reference / Source: 'Arim Muhammad bin al-Fadl al-Sadusi narrated it, in Imam al-Bukhari's "al-Kabir" (3/29), from Hammad bin Zayd, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, as "mu'dal".
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (12/432) by way of al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, from 'Ali bin Salih, from 'Abd Allah bin Mus'ab, from his father, who said: Ibn al-Zubayr used to narrate that on the day of al-Khandaq he was in Fari', the fortress of Hassan (may Allah be pleased with him), with the women, and 'Umar bin Abi Salamah was with them; then he mentioned something similar.
Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (weak), and it is also "mursal", since Mus'ab bin Thabit did not live in the time of his grandfather 'Abd Allah (bin al-Zubayr).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is what the author said here, although he himself narrated with a chain, at hadith number (5121), a hadith about the acceptance of Islam by Arwa bint 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with her), whose chain is better than al-Waqidi's.
