Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7034

Ubaydullah bin Abi Ziyad says: I asked Imam al-Zuhri about silk, whether women may wear it or not. He said that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to him that he saw a striped silk garment on Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with these words; they recorded it in abridged form from the narration of Ibn Jurayj and Yunus bin Yazid from al-Zuhri.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: The hadith is "sahih". This hadith has two chains: the narrators of the first chain are thiqah except Abu 'Utbah (whose name is Ahmad bin al-Faraj al-Hijazi), and likewise his shaykh Baqiyyah bin al-Walid; there is criticism of both of them. Both are "hasan al-hadith" in corroborating chains and supporting reports, and this is one of them.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Baqiyyah explicitly stated that he heard it from al-Zubaydi (Muhammad bin al-Walid), and both of them have been corroborated.
Grading: And the second chain is "jayyid" (good).
Details of the narration: Abu Dawud (4058) and al-Nasa'i (9504) narrated it by way of 'Amr bin 'Uthman, and Abu Dawud (4058) from Kathir bin 'Ubayd; both of them from Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, with this chain.
Details of the narration: Al-Bayhaqi (2/425) narrated it by way of Ya'qub al-Fasawi, from Hajjaj bin Abi Mani'.
Note / Clarification: The name of Hajjaj's grandfather has dropped out of the Indian edition.
Details of the narration: Al-Bukhari (5842) and al-Nasa'i (9505) narrated it by way of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah; Abu Dawud (4058) and al-Nasa'i (9504) by way of Muhammad bin al-Walid al-Zubaydi; al-Nasa'i (9506) by way of Ibn Jurayj; and al-Nasa'i (9507) by way of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari; all four of them narrate it from al-Zuhri.
Reference / Source: It has passed by way of al-Awza'i and Ma'mar from al-Zuhri at number (7016); see our comment on it there.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is what he (al-Hakim) said, although this report is not in Muslim. As for al-Bukhari, he narrated it by way of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, as passed in the takhrij. The narration of Ibn Jurayj is in al-Nasa'i (9506), and we have not found the narration of Yunus bin Yazid.
