أخبرني الحسين بن الحسن بن أيوب، حدثنا أبو حاتم الرازي، حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح المِصري، حدثنا ابن لهيعة، حدثني عُقيل بن خالد، عن الزهري بن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن أبي هريرة: أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ لقي عثمان بن عفان وهو مغموم، فقال: "ما شأنك يا عثمان؟ " قال: بأبي أنت وأُمِّي يا رسول الله (1)، هل دخَلَ على أحدٍ من الناس ما دخل عليَّ، تُوفِّيَت بنتُ رسولِ الله ﷺ (2) رحمها الله، وانقطعَ الصِّهرُ فيما بيني وبينك إلى آخر الأبد، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: "أتقول ذلك يا عثمان وهذا جبريل ﵇ يأمُرُني عن أمر الله ﷿ أن أُزَوِّجَك أُختَها أم كلثوم على مِثل صَدَاقِها وعلى مِثلِ عُدَّتِها؟! "، فزوجه رسول الله ﷺ إياها (3).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was grief-stricken. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Uthman! What is the matter with you?" He said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! Has any person suffered the grief that has befallen me? The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (Ruqayyah) has passed away, may Allah have mercy on her, and the bond of marriage-kinship that was between me and you has ended forever. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uthman! Do you say this, when Jibril (peace be upon him) has conveyed to me, by the command of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that I should marry you to her sister Umm Kulthum, with exactly the same dowry and exactly the same provisions?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her to him.

Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have the words: "بأبي أنت يا رسول الله وأمي" (may my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah).

(3) إسناده ضعيف، عبد الله بن صالح وشيخه عبد الله بن لهيعة، سيئا الحفظ، وقد اختلف عليهما فيه، فأخرجه ابن منده في "معرفة الصحابة" ص 932 - ومن طريقه ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 39/ 38 - من طريق إبراهيم بن سليمان البرلسي، وأبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (7358) من طريق جعفر بن إلياس بن صدقة، كلاهما عن عبد الله بن صالح المصري، عن عقيل بن خالد، عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن عثمان بن عفان. فجعلا صحابيه عثمان بن عفان. وقال ابن منده: غريب بهذا الإسناد، تفرَّد به ابن لهيعة، وقال أبو نعيم: تفرد به ابن لهيعة عن عقيل.
Grading: Its chain is "weak". 'Abd Allah bin Salih and his shaykh 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah both had poor memory (sayyi' al-hifz), and there has been disagreement over them regarding this hadith.
Details of the narration: Thus Ibn Mandah narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (p. 932) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 39/38) by way of Ibrahim bin Sulayman al-Burullusi, and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7358) by way of Ja'far bin Ilyas bin Sadaqah; both of them from 'Abd Allah bin Salih al-Misri, from 'Uqayl bin Khalid, from Ibn Shihab, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from 'Uthman bin 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). So they made 'Uthman bin 'Affan its Companion.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Mandah said: It is "gharib" with this chain; Ibn Lahi'ah is alone in narrating it. Abu Nu'aym said: Ibn Lahi'ah is alone in narrating it from 'Uqayl.
وخالفهما محمد بن يحيى الذهلي عند ابن عساكر 39/ 38 فرواه عن عبد الله بن صالح، عن عقيل، عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب مرسلًا. وقال المحفوظ عن سعيد مرسل.
Details of the narration: Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli differed from them (see Ibn 'Asakir 39/38). He narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Salih, from 'Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, as "mursal". And he said: What is preserved from Sa'id is that it is "mursal".
ورواه هانئ بن المتوكل الإسكندراني عند يعقوب بن سفيان في "المعرفة والتاريخ" 3/ 159 - ومن طريقه ابن عساكر 39/ 37 - عن ابن لهيعة عن عقيل، عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب مرسلًا. وأخرجه ابن عساكر 39/ 37 من طريق حبيب طريق حبيب كاتب مالك، عن مالك، عن ابن شهاب، عن سعيد بن المسيب، عن أبي هريرة. وحبيب كاتب مالك متهم بالكذب.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hani' bin al-Mutawakkil al-Iskandarani narrated it, in Ya'qub bin Sufyan's "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (3/159) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir 39/37), from Ibn Lahi'ah, from 'Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, as "mursal".
Details of the narration: And Ibn 'Asakir (39/37) narrated it by way of Habib, the scribe of Malik, from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Habib, the scribe of Malik, is "muttaham bi al-kadhib" (accused of lying).
وأخرج ابن ماجه (110) وغيره من طريق عثمان بن خالد العثماني، عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي الزناد، عن أبي الزناد، عن الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة أن النَّبيّ ﷺ لقي عثمان عند باب المسجد، فقال: "يا عثمان، هذا جبريل أخبرني أنَّ الله قد زوجك أم كلثوم بمثل صداق رقية، على مثل صحبتها". وإسناده ضعيف جدًّا، عثمان العثماني متروك الحديث.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Majah (110) and others narrated by way of 'Uthman bin Khalid al-'Uthmani, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) at the door of the mosque and said: "O 'Uthman, this is Jibril informing me that Allah has married you to Umm Kulthum for a dowry like Ruqayyah's and on the same terms of companionship as hers."
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan); 'Uthman al-'Uthmani is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith).
