(3). It is narrated from Abd al-Wahid bin Abi Awn al-Dawsi that he said: Al-Nu'man bin Abi al-Jawn al-Kindi came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He and the people of his family lived in the part of Najd adjoining al-Sharabbah. He accepted Islam and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not marry you to a most beautiful widow among the Arabs? She was married to her paternal cousin, who died, and now she is a widow and greatly desires to be married to you." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her for a dowry (mahr) of twelve uqiyah and a nash (half an uqiyah). He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do not keep her dowry low." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not fixed the dowry of any of my wives higher than this, nor have I fixed the dowry of any of my daughters higher than this." Al-Nu'man said: "In following you there is consolation." Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Send one of your messengers to bring her to you. I am going with your messenger and will send your family along with him." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) with him. When the two of them arrived there, the woman was in her house, and she gave them permission to enter. Sayyiduna Abu Usayd said: "Men who are strangers do not look upon the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." This was after the commands of the veil (hijab) had been revealed. The woman sent word asking (then what should I do?), and he said: "Veil yourself; there must be a screen between you and the men with whom you speak, except those who are your mahram." So she did so. Abu Usayd says: I stayed there three days, then I seated her in a litter on a camel and brought her to Madinah, and I lodged her among Banu Sa'idah. The women of the neighbourhood came to her, welcomed her and congratulated her, and when they left they began speaking of her beauty. This spread throughout Madinah and her arrival became the talk of the town. Sayyiduna Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi says: I returned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was at that time among Banu Amr bin Awf, and I informed him. Then, when the women learned of her beauty, a woman came to her (out of envy or scheming) and said: "You are from a royal family. If you want your standing with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to be raised, then when he comes near you, seek refuge in Allah from him. In this way your worth and standing with him will increase, and he will regard you with greater desire."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "al-Ansari".
Note / Clarification: This name has been corrupted in the manuscripts in several ways; we have taken the correct text from the sources. The author of "Marasid al-Ittila'" (2/789) says: "It is (with a fathah on the first and second letters and a shaddah on the 'b') the name of a place between al-Sulaylah and al-Rabadhah."
Note / Clarification: In the handwritten manuscripts this word has been corrupted and written as "wa-khatabtu"; the correct text has been taken from the sources of the takhrij.
Note / Clarification: The correct text has been taken from (M) and (S). Manuscript (Z) has the wording "فسيرني لأمري" and (B) has "فسيري لأمري".
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (M) the wording is: "حجاب بيني وبينك وبين من تكلمي".
Note / Clarification: Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "farihin", while in (M) and (S) the word is written without dots.
Note / Clarification: The correct text has been taken from (Z) and (B). (M) and (S) have "fa-qalu" (masculine form), whereas in our view the correct usage should be "fa-qulna" (feminine form).
Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Muhammad bin Ya'qub bin 'Utbah has "jahalah" (being unknown), and this report is "mu'dal" (one in which two or more consecutive narrators are missing). Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (10/138-139), and by way of him al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (11/613-614), from al-Waqidi with this chain.
