Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6976

It is narrated from Qatadah that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married Asma' bint al-Nu'man al-Ghifariyyah, from the people of Yemen. She was the daughter of al-Nu'man bin al-Harith bin Sharahil bin al-Nu'man. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to her and called her, she said: "You come (to me) yourself!" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) divorced her.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (M) and (S) this word was corrupted into "al-Hasan".

Grading: Its chain is weak because of "Zuhayr bin al-'Ala'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The context of this report contradicts the hadith of Abu Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him) which is in "Sahih al-Bukhari" and comes below. "Abu al-Ash'ath" in the chain is Ahmad bin al-Miqdam bin Sulayman bin al-Ash'ath.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded this narration in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (7458) by way of al-Husayn bin Abi Ma'shar, and Ibn 'Asakir (3/ 229) by way of Muhammad bin al-Husayn al-Za'farani; both of them (al-Husayn and Muhammad) narrate it from Abu al-Ash'ath Ahmad bin al-Miqdam with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (5255) narrated from the hadith of Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi, who said: We went out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until we reached a garden called "al-Shawt". We reached two gardens and sat between them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit here", and he went in. The Jawniyyah (the woman of the Jawn tribe) had been brought and lodged in a house among palm trees, the house of Umaymah bint al-Nu'man bin Shurahbil, and with her was her nurse who looked after her.
Details of the narration: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went in to her, he said: "Give yourself to me." She said (arrogantly): "Does a queen give herself to a commoner?" The narrator said: He extended his hand to place it on her so that she would calm down, and she said: "I seek refuge with Allah from you." He said: "You have sought refuge with a great Refuge." Then he came out to us and said: "O Abu Usayd, clothe her with two raziqi garments (long white linen garments) and take her back to her family."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari (5256) narrated it "mu'allaq" (without a connected chain) with different wording: 'Abbas bin Sahl narrates from his father (Sahl) and Abu Usayd that they both said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Umaymah bint Shurahbil. When she was brought in to him, he extended his hand towards her, and it seemed she disliked that, so he ordered Abu Usayd to equip her and clothe her with two raziqi garments (and send her off)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another context of this incident is in the hadith of Sahl bin Sa'd in al-Bukhari (5637) and Muslim (2007): A woman of the Arabs was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he ordered Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi to send for her. He sent for her and she came, and stayed in the fortress of Banu Sa'idah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out and came to her. When he entered, she was sitting with her head lowered. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to her, she said: "I seek refuge with Allah from you." He said: "I have granted you refuge from me." The people said to her: Do you know who this is? She said: No. They said: "This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who came to propose to you." She said: "Then I have been most wretched." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back that day and sat with his Companions in the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah.
