Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6950

It is narrated from Sayyidah Juwayriyah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) that her name was formerly "Barrah", and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed it and named her "Juwayriyah", because he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that it be said: "He has come out from Barrah (righteousness)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The speaker (here) is Muhammad bin Ishaq, as in the previous chain.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We did not find this narration by way of Ibn Ishaq with this wording in anyone other than the author (al-Hakim); however, al-Waqidi corroborated him in it. In the takhrij it will also come from Ibn Ishaq with different wording.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (10/ 115) and al-Tabari (11/ 609) narrated it by way of al-Waqidi from 'Abd Allah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yuhannas, from Zayd bin Abi 'Attab, from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata', from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah, from Juwayriyah bint al-Harith: that her name had been "Barrah" (righteous), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed it and named her "Juwayriyah"; he disliked that it be said: He has left Barrah (righteousness).
Grading: Its narrators above al-Waqidi are "la ba'sa bihim".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Ibn 'Abbas in Muslim (2140) supports it with the same wording; it will come under number (6961), and see our comments on it there.
Reference / Source: However, Abu Dawud (4953) narrated by way of Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata', that Zaynab bint Abi Salamah asked him: What have you named your daughter? He said: I named her "Barrah". She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade this name; I was named Barrah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not claim purity for yourselves; Allah knows best who among you are the righteous." It was asked: Then what shall we name her? He said: "Name her Zaynab."
Grading: This hadith is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Ishaq explicitly stated that he heard it from his shaykh in al-Bukhari's "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (821), and he has also been corroborated. (Note:) Juwayriyah is not mentioned in this report.
Reference / Source: Muslim (2142/ 19) also narrated it by way of Yazid bin Abi Habib from Muhammad bin 'Amr, without Muhammad bin Ishaq in the chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Walid bin Kathir corroborated Ibn Ishaq in Muslim (2142/ 18); he narrated it from Muhammad bin 'Amr, who said: Zaynab bint Umm Salamah told me: My name was "Barrah", and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named me Zaynab. She said: Zaynab bint Jahsh came to him, and her name was also Barrah, so he named her Zaynab.
