Sa'id bin Umar bin Abi Salamah narrated from his father, from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a calamity befalls any of you, let him say: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un, Allahumma indaka ahtasibu musibati fa'jurni fiha' (We belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it)." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Whenever I wanted to say (this part of the supplication): "And grant me something better than it in exchange," I thought (to myself): Who could be better than Abu Salamah? But I kept on reciting the supplication until I said it in full. Then, when her waiting period (iddah) was over, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed marriage to her, but she declined; then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) proposed, and she declined him too. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his messenger to her with a proposal of marriage, and she said: "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and to his messenger. Convey my greetings of peace to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and tell him that I am a woman with children and very jealous, and that none of my guardians (awliya) is present here." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word in reply: "As for your saying that you have children, Allah will suffice you for your children; as for your saying that you are jealous, I will pray to Allah to remove your jealousy; and as for the guardians, not one of them, whether present or absent, will be displeased with me (for this marriage)." So she said to her son: "O Umar! Get up and marry me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he married her to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "I will not give you less than what I gave your sister so-and-so (one of the pure wives): two water jars, two hand mills, and a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to her while she was nursing (her daughter) Zaynab; whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, she would take the child into her lap and start nursing her. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was extremely modest and generous, and (on seeing this) he would go back. Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), who was her foster brother, perceived this. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to come to her, and Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, went in to her, took Zaynab from her lap and said: "Let go of this ugly, wretched child, on account of whom you have been causing hardship to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, cast his eyes around the house (and asked): "Where is Zunab (Zaynab)? Why do I not see Zunab?" She said: "Ammar came and took her away." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated the marriage with his wife and said: "If you wish, I will stay seven days with you, but then I will stay seven days with (each of) the other wives."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain. Ibn Umar bin Abi Salamah, whose name Hammad bin Salamah did not mention in this hadith, has been named by other hadith scholars as Sa'id bin Umar bin Abi Salamah, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the manuscripts there was a blank space (bayad) in place of the text between the square brackets, and we have supplied it from some of the takhrij sources such as "Musnad Ahmad" and "Sahih Ibn Hibban".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts this word had been corrupted into "harir".
(2793). Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are thiqah except Ibn Umar bin Abi Salamah, who is "majhul". See the full discussion of it under number (2793). Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Dawud (3119) from Musa bin Isma'il, with this chain, in abridged form. Reference / Source: The narration of Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani' from al-Sari bin Khuzaymah has passed under number (6787); Ibn Umar bin Abi Salamah is not in it, and in it the story of the supplication is given as the hadith of Umm Salamah from Abu Salamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) Thus (Sa'id) the author (al-Hakim) said, but in the sources available to us that narrated this hadith we have not found anyone who named him. No son of Umar bin Abi Salamah named "Sa'id" is known, nor is he mentioned in the biographical books. Perhaps "Sa'id" is a corruption of "Muhammad"; this Muhammad bin Umar narrated from his father other than this hadith, and he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown standing).
