Mustadrak al-Hakim 6889 — The best of men is Abu Bakr and the best

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me as commander over an army that included Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). When I returned, I said: O Messenger of Allah! Who is the most beloved of people to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why do you want to ask that?" I said: O Messenger of Allah! I want to know it. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Aishah." I said: I mean among the men. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Her father (Abu Bakr)."

Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih"; this chain, whose narrators are thiqah, is "munqati'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): According to Ibn Ma'in, al-Sha'bi (Amir bin Sharahil) did not hear from Amr bin al-As, but he has been corroborated (mutaba'ah). Jarir is Ibn Abd al-Hamid, and Mughirah is Ibn Miqsam, both of them al-Dabbi.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then Umar bin al-Khattab", and then he counted several men. In al-Bukhari's second narration there is a further addition: "So I fell silent, fearing that he would put me last of them."
