Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6888

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: Who is the most beloved of people to you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Aishah." It was said: We do not mean your family. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then Abu Bakr."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, and it has another sahih chain on the condition of them both, by which this hadith is known:

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih on the strength of other supporting reports).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although the narrators of this chain are thiqah, Humayd (al-Tawil) is among those who commit tadlis, and here he did not state explicitly that he heard from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him). As will come, it has been narrated that between the two of them is al-Hasan al-Basri. Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis" that this narration is "gharib jiddan" (very strange).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hatim al-Razi said in "al-Ilal" (2651): This hadith is "munkar", and it may be Humayd from al-Hasan from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), meaning it is "mursal" with no mention of Anas in it. While at (2666) he said with certainty that this narration is actually from al-Hasan from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and via Anas it is "not preserved" (ghayr mahfuz). Likewise al-Daraqutni said with certainty in "al-Ilal" (2439) that the correct view is that it is via Mu'tamir from Humayd from al-Hasan as "mursal".
Note / Clarification: We say: we have not found this narration from al-Hasan al-Basri in mursal form.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Majah (101) from Ahmad bin Abdah and al-Husayn bin al-Hasan al-Marwazi, and al-Tirmidhi (3890) from Ahmad bin Abdah al-Dabbi, both of them from al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman, with this chain.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih gharib" from this route, from the hadith of Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Musayyab bin Wadih differed from them in Ibn Hibban (7107) and narrated it from al-Mu'tamir, from Humayd, from al-Hasan al-Basri, from Anas, that is, he added "al-Hasan al-Basri" between Humayd and Anas.
Grading: Al-Musayyab is a "da'if" narrator, and some counted him as "matruk". Ibn Adi said: He has many narrations from his teachers, and the general reason for his contradicting others is not deliberate error; rather, matters became confused for him, and otherwise he is "la ba'sa bihi" (acceptable). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". For details see "Lisan al-Mizan" (8/ 71).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal": There is also disagreement in the narration from al-Musayyab himself; it was said: he narrated from Mu'tamir, from Humayd, from al-Hasan, from Anas; and Ibn Abi Dawud narrated from him from Mu'tamir, from Humayd, from Anas (without al-Hasan).
Note / Clarification: We say: this inconsistency is due to al-Musayyab's own weakness, and Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sam'un al-Wa'iz in "al-Amali" (62) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (30/ 136) via al-Khalil bin Zakariyya al-Shaybani, who said: Muhammad bin Thabit narrated to us, he said: My father Thabit al-Bunani narrated to me from Anas.
Grading: This chain is "talif" (ruined, extremely weak) and cannot be relied upon.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator al-Khalil is "muttaham" (accused of lying), and Ibn Thabit is "da'if".
Note / Clarification: See the two hadiths after it.
