Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6862

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was asked: When did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) take you to his home? She said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated to Madinah, he left us and his daughters behind (in Makkah). Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Zayd bin Harithah and his freed slave Abu Rafi' to us, and gave them two camels and five hundred dirhams, which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), to buy the mounts they needed. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Abdullah bin Uraiqit al-Dili along with them with two or three camels, and wrote to Abdullah bin Abi Bakr to bring his household, namely Umm Ruman, me, and my sister Asma', the wife of al-Zubayr. So they all set out, and when they reached Qudayd, Zayd bin Harithah bought three camels with those five hundred dirhams. Then they all entered Makkah, and there they met Talhah bin Ubaydullah, who intended to emigrate with the family of Abu Bakr. Then we all set out together. Zayd bin Harithah and Abu Rafi' took Sayyidah Fatimah, Sayyidah Umm Kulthum and Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam'ah, while Zayd also mounted Umm Ayman and Usamah bin Zayd. Abdullah bin Abi Bakr set out with his mother Umm Ruman and his two sisters, and Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaydullah was also with them. We all travelled together until, when we reached al-Bayd, my camel bolted while I was in a litter with my mother. My mother began crying out: "O my daughter! O my bride!" until our camel came down the slope of Lift and was brought under control, and we remained safe. Then we reached Madinah, and I stayed with the family of Abu Bakr, while the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in their own place. In those days he (peace and blessings be upon him) was building the mosque and our apartments; then he (peace and blessings be upon him) moved his household there, and we stayed a few days in the house of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, what prevents you from taking your wife to your home?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The dowry (mahr)." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) twelve uqiyah and a nashsh (twelve and a half uqiyah) for the dowry. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent that dowry to us, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took me to his home in this very house in which I live today; in this same house he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and there he (peace and blessings be upon him) was buried. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made a door for himself into the mosque directly opposite the door of Sayyidah Aishah's (may Allah be pleased with her) apartment. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) built for Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) one of those houses that were beside mine, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stay with her.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) died in the year 58 AH, in the month of Ramadan.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The narrator's word "bi'l-Bayd": the author of "Marasid al-Ittila'" 1/ 243 said: "al-Bayd" (with fathah) is one of the halting places of Banu Kinanah in the Hijaz.
Note / Clarification: And in 1/ 275 he said: "Tamanni" (with two fathahs and the nun doubled and with kasrah): a land towards Madinah before "Thaniyyat Harsha" (on the road to Makkah near al-Juhfah, visible from the sea), in which there are mountains called "al-Bayd".

Note / Clarification: (2) "Lift": the author of "al-Marasid" 3/ 1206 said: It is the name of a mountain pass (thaniyyah) between Makkah and Madinah. He transmitted from al-Qadi Iyad three ways of vocalising it: with fathah on the lam and sukun on the fa' (laft), with both voweled (lafat), and with kasrah on the lam and sukun on the fa' (lift).

Note / Clarification: (3) In the handwritten manuscripts it is written "ila" (to), and it is likewise in al-Tabari's "Dhayl al-Mudhayyal", whereas it did not appear in manuscript (S); what is established here is taken from "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd".

Note / Clarification: (4) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is "ithnay 'ashar" (twelve), whereas here the text is established from manuscript (S).

Note / Clarification: (1) In the handwritten manuscripts this was distorted into "thalath" (three), and we have corrected it from "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" and established it here.

Grading: (2) Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The discussion of its chain up to Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi has already passed under hadith number (4060). Musa bin Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman: he is Ibn Abdullah bin Harithah bin al-Nu'man, and his father is known as "Abu al-Rijal", so his lineage is known, but we have not found a biography of him; likewise we could not identify Raytah.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" 10/ 62-66 and al-Tabari, as in "al-Muntakhab min Dhayl al-Mudhayyal" 11/ 601-602, through the route of al-Waqidi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 23/ (60) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in the biography of Umm Ruman in "al-Isti'ab" p. 951-952 through the route of Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Zabalah al-Makhzumi, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), in a similar way.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And Ibn Zabalah is accused (of lying).
Details of the narration: The story of the dowry (sadaq) has already passed in abridged form, with a different wording, with the author (al-Hakim) at number (2799).
