Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscripts (M) and (S) it is "rajul", then a blank space, and then "al-Tamimi", whereas in manuscript (B) it is "rajul 'an Abi Halah al-Tamimi"; the text between the square brackets we have established from al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" and other sources of takhrij.
Grading: (2) Its chain is very weak (wahin) because of "Jumay' bin Umar al-Ijli".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym al-Mula'i said: He was a sinner (fasiq). Abu Dawud said: I fear that he may be a liar (kadhdhab). Al-Ijli said: His hadith is written down, but he is not strong. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". In this chain there are also two unnamed (mubham) narrators. Al-Mizzi said in "al-Tahdhib" 30/ 315: In the chain of his hadith there are some who are not known. Al-Bardha'i said in his "Questions to Abu Zur'ah" 2/ 550-551: I asked Abu Zur'ah during the ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah about the hadith of Ibn Abi Halah (concerning the description of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), and he refused to read it to me and said: There is something in it which I fear is not authentic.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1161) and (1941), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (22/ 414) and "al-Ahadith al-Tiwal" (29) - and from him Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (565) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6553) - from Ali bin Abd al-Aziz al-Baghawi, with this same chain at length, but al-Uqayli did not quote its wording.
Reference / Source: It was also narrated at length and in abridged form by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" 1/ 362-364, Ibrahim al-Harbi in "Gharib al-Hadith" 1/ 42 and 2/ 859, Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" 3/ 195, Abu Nu'aym in "al-Dala'il" (565), and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/ 286-288 and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1362) through several routes from Abu Ghassan Malik bin Isma'il, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi in "al-Shama'il" (8), (226), (337) and (352), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Hamm wa al-Huzn" (1), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi in "al-Nawadir" (90), (357) and (1331), Muhammad bin Harun in "Sifat al-Nabi ﷺ" p. 9-12, Ibn Hibban in "al-Thiqat" 2/ 145, al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1022), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 2/ 16, Abu al-Shaykh in "Akhlaq al-Nabi ﷺ" (203), (218) and (582), and Ibn Asakir 3/ 343-345 through the route of Sufyan bin Waki'. And Abu al-Shaykh (203), (218) and (582) narrated it through the route of Ubayd bin Isma'il al-Habbari, and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/ 286-288 through the route of Sa'id bin Hammad al-Ansari. All three of them (Sufyan, Ubayd, Sa'id) narrate it from Jumay' bin Umar with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In all the narrations of Abu al-Shaykh it reads: "A man of Banu Tamim, from the descendants of Abu Halah, narrated from al-Hasan bin Ali", without mentioning the intermediary between the two. Ibn Hibban said (about Jumay' bin Umar): "It carries no weight in the heart."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Umar al-Adani, as in "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (2/ 6322) - and through his route Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (346) - and by Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1232), al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1160) and (1940), and Muhammad bin Harun p. 9-12 through the route of Amr bin Muhammad al-Anqazi, from Jumay' bin Umar, from Yazid bin Umar al-Tamimi (from the descendants of Abu Halah), from his father, from al-Hasan bin Ali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Amr al-Anqazi named this unnamed man "Yazid bin Umar" and made Ibn Abi Halah his father. Al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 6/ 207: "Amr bin Muhammad al-Qurashi (i.e. al-Anqazi) narrated from Jumay' bin Umar, from Yazid bin Umar, from his father; I do not think it is authentic." Ibn Abi Hatim followed him (al-Bukhari) in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 6/ 143. And Ibn Hajar said in "Lisan al-Mizan" 6/ 164: "Umar al-Tamimi was mentioned by Ibn Hibban in al-Thiqat, while Ibn Adi said that he is majhul (unknown)."
Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form by Abu Nu'aym in "al-Dala'il" (552) through the route of Nasr bin Muzahim al-Minqari, from Amr bin Sa'id al-Asadi, from Sa'd bin Tarif, from Asbagh bin Nubatah, from al-Hasan bin Ali, who said: I said to Hind bin Abi Halah: Describe the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to me as if I were looking at him. He said: Yes, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a handsome face; his face shone like the full moon on the night of the fourteenth.
Grading: Its chain is ruined (talif) and consists of a continuous series of abandoned (matruk) narrators; Nasr bin Muzahim and Asbagh bin Nubatah are both matruk al-hadith, and Sa'd bin Tarif was accused (of lying) by al-Daraqutni and Ibn Hibban.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Shadhan in "al-Mashyakhah al-Sughra" (61) - and through his route Ibn Asakir 3/ 337-340 - and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 1/ 285-286 through the route of al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Yahya bin al-Hasan, from Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Ja'far, from Ali bin Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn, from his brother Musa bin Ja'far, from his father Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn, from his father, from his father Ali, from al-Hasan bin Ali, with this same chain. Ibn Asakir said: It is gharib.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We (the editors) say: Al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Yahya is accused of lying, as in "Lisan al-Mizan" 3/ 116, and we could not find a biography of Isma'il bin Muhammad.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 7/ 134 through the route of Mu'attib, the freed slave of Ja'far bin Muhammad, from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, who said: Al-Husayn bin Ali said: I asked my maternal uncle Hind bin Abi Halah (and he did not quote its full wording). Ibn Adi said after it: Hind bin Abi Halah is known by this hadith describing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Ja'far bin Muhammad narrates it from him, from his father, from al-Husayn bin Ali, from him (Hind); while the narration of Muhammad bin Ali from al-Husayn bin Ali is mursal and is not connected.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We (the editors) say: Mu'attib, the freed slave of Ja'far, was accused by Abu al-Fath al-Azdi, and Yahya bin Ma'in said: "He is nothing" (laysa bi-shay'); see "Lisan al-Mizan" 8/ 105.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1230) and (1231), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Ma'rifah" (6554), Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in "al-Amali" (1020), and Ibn Asakir 3/ 336-337 through several routes from Isma'il bin Maslamah al-Qa'nabi, from Ishaq bin Salih al-Makhzumi, from Ya'qub al-Taymi, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he said to Hind bin Abi Halah al-Tamimi (who was the stepson of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)): Describe the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to us, for perhaps you have firmer knowledge of him than we do. He said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was given to long silence … etc.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Asakir said: This is "gharib" as a narration of Ibn Abbas from Hind. We (the editors) say: Ishaq bin Salih was given a biography by Ibn Abi Hatim, who remained silent about him and mentioned no narrator from him other than Isma'il bin Maslamah, so he is majhul (unknown). And Ya'qub al-Taymi, if he is "al-Majishun", then his narration from Ibn Abbas is mursal; otherwise we do not know him.
