Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6837

It is narrated from Abu Wa'il that Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) went in to (his maternal uncle) Abu Hashim bin Utbah while he was weeping. He asked: O uncle, why are you weeping? Is it because of some pain, or out of grief over (leaving) the world? He replied: Neither of these; rather, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge from me which I was not able to keep. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Abu Hashim, soon wealth will come within your reach of the kind that is given to people."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscripts (M), (S) and (B) it reads "amwalan yu'taha aqwam", but in manuscript (B) the word "amwal" is in the nominative (with dammah), and after it "wa-iyyahu" is added, whereas in manuscripts (M) and (S) a blank space is left in its place. In the narration of al-Tabarani, which is through the route of Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Misri from al-Firyabi, the wording is: "sa-tara amwalan yu'taha aqwam" (You will soon see wealth that will be given to people, whereas from the whole of this world a servant and a mount in the path of Allah are sufficient for you); the narrator says: So I think that today both of these have come together for me.

Grading: (2) This hadith is hasan, as has already been explained under numbers (5059) and (5060).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, what is preserved (mahfuz) is that in the narration of Mansur (bin al-Mu'tamir), "Samurah bin Sahm" is mentioned between Abu Wa'il (Shaqiq bin Salamah) and the Companion, while Sufyan (al-Thawri) is alone in not mentioning "Samurah", whereas other narrators have narrated it from Mansur with mention of Samurah. Al-Daraqutni said in "al-Ilal" (1201): "It is narrated by Abu Wa'il, and there is disagreement about it from him; al-A'mash narrated it from Abu Wa'il thus: Mu'awiyah visited his maternal uncle Abu Hashim. Mansur contradicted him and narrated it from Abu Wa'il, from Samurah bin Sahm, from Abu Hashim, and the hadith of Mansur is closer to the correct." (End of quote). And Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id - although he is weak - is corroborated.

Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 24/ (15665), al-Tirmidhi (2327), al-Nasa'i (9724), al-Tabarani (7200), and Ibn al-Sunni (40) through several routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain. In some narrations al-A'mash is paired with Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir. Al-Tirmidhi said: Za'idah and Abidah bin Humayd narrated it from Mansur, from Abu Wa'il, from Samurah bin Sahm, who said: "Mu'awiyah visited Abu Hashim," and then mentioned something similar.
