(4) تحرَّف في (م) و (ص) إلى: أبي العلاء، والمثبت من (ب).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In manuscripts (M) and (S) this name has been corrupted into "Abu al-'Ala'", whereas the correct name is the one entered in manuscript (B).

(5) لفظة "بن" سقطت من (م) و (ص)، وأثبتناها من (ب).
Note / Clarification: The word "bin" had dropped out of manuscripts (M) and (S), and we have entered it with the help of manuscript (B).

(6) إسناده ضعيف، فقد اضطرب هشيم -وهو ابن بشير- فيه، فوصله مرةً بذكر ابن العلاء الحضرمي -ولا يعرف من هو- ومرةً يسقطه ويرسله عن العلاء بن الحضرمي. وقد أشار الدارقطني إلى تفرُّد هشيم عن منصور بهذه الرواية كما في "أطراف الغرائب" لابن طاهر المقدسي 4/ 254.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hushaym (Ibn Bashir) was inconsistent ("idtirab") in it: sometimes he narrated it as connected (mawsul) with mention of "Ibn al-'Ala' al-Hadrami" (whose identity is unknown), and sometimes he dropped that intermediary and narrated it as "mursal" directly from al-'Ala' bin al-Hadrami. Imam al-Daraqutni pointed out that Hushaym is alone in narrating it this way from Mansur, as in Ibn Tahir al-Maqdisi's "Atraf al-Ghara'ib" (4/ 254).
ورواية هشيم الثانية المرسلة هي المحفوظة الموافقة لرواية شعبة وأبي عوانة من أصحاب منصور بن زاذان كما سيأتي.
Important point: Hushaym's second narration, the "mursal" one, is the "mahfuz" (preserved) one, because it agrees with the narrations of Shu'bah and Abu 'Awanah, among the students of Mansur bin Zadhan, as will come.
وأخرجه أبو داود (5135) عن محمد بن عبد الرحيم، عن معلى بن منصور، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud narrated it (5135) from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahim, from Mu'alla bin Mansur, with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد 31/ (18986) -وعنه أبو داود (5135) - عن هشيم، به. وقال أحمد عقبه: حدثنا به هشيم مرتين، مرة عن ابن العلاء، ومرة لم يصل.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (31/ 18986), and via him Abu Dawud (5135), narrated it from Hushaym. Imam Ahmad said after it: "Hushaym narrated it to us twice: once from Ibn al-'Ala' (connected), and once without connecting it (mursal)."

Note / Clarification: This narration will come later at hadith number (7910) via Hushaym, like his narration here.
وأخرجه أبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (5510) من طريق القاسم بن عيسى، عن هشيم، عن منصور بن زاذان، عن ابن سيرين: أنَّ العلاء بن الحضرمي … فذكره مرسلًا.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5510) via al-Qasim bin 'Isa, from Hushaym, from Mansur bin Zadhan, from Ibn Sirin, that al-'Ala' bin al-Hadrami, and he mentioned it as "mursal".
وأما رواية شعبة عن منصور بن زاذان، فأخرجها ابن أبي شيبة 8/ 660، وأبو القاسم البغوي في "الجعديات" (1714)، والطبراني في "الكبير" 18/ (162).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: As for the narration of Imam Shu'bah from Mansur bin Zadhan, it was transmitted by Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/ 660), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (1714) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (18/ 162).
وأما رواية أبي عوانة الوضاح اليشكري عنه، فأخرجها ابن الأعرابي في "معجمه" (2140)، وأبو نعيم في "المعرفة" (5509).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: As for the narration of Abu 'Awanah al-Waddah al-Yashkuri from him, it was transmitted by Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (2140) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Ma'rifah" (5509).
وكذلك رواه خُليف بن عقبة عند ابن قانع في "معجم الصحابة" 2/ 301، وهشام بن حسان عند البيهقي 10/ 130، كلاهما عن ابن سيرين: أنَّ العلاء … فذكره مرسلًا.
Reference / Source: Likewise Khulayf bin 'Uqbah (in Ibn Qani's "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" 2/ 301) and Hisham bin Hassan (in al-Bayhaqi 10/ 130) narrated it, both from Ibn Sirin, that al-'Ala', and he mentioned it as "mursal".
