Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6791

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suhayl bin Bayda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on his she-camel, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his voice and called two or three times: "O Suhayl bin Bayda'!" and each time Suhayl answered him (peace and blessings be upon him). The people heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and realised that he (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to say something to them, so those ahead stopped and those behind caught up, until, when they had all gathered, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever bears witness that there is no god but Allah, Allah has made the Fire forbidden for him and has made Paradise obligatory for him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its marfu' part is "sahih li-ghayrihi", but this particular chain is weak because of a break (inqita') in it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id bin al-Salt did not meet Suhayl Ibn Bayda', because Suhayl died while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was still alive. Imam al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (3/ 483) and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil" (4/ 34) gave him entries and stated that his narration from Suhayl Ibn Bayda' is "mursal"; they mentioned no criticism or commendation of him, while Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". 'Abd Allah bin Salih, although he has been criticised, is corroborated here. Imam al-Dhahabi said: "Its chain is good (jayyid), with irsal in it."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (25/ 15738) via Bakr bin Mudar, and Imam Ahmad (15739 and 15840) and Ibn Hibban (199) via Haywah bin Shurayh; both of them from Yazid bin al-Had, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (15839) with the chain of Ibrahim bin Sa'd al-Zuhri, from Yazid bin al-Had, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin al-Harith, from Suhayl Ibn Bayda'; Sa'id bin al-Salt is not in this route.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there are narrations from several other Companions, among them Anas (al-Bukhari 128, Muslim 32), 'Itban bin Malik (al-Bukhari 425, Muslim 33) and Ibn Mas'ud (Muslim 92) (may Allah be pleased with them).
