Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6770

Aban narrates from his father Sulayman that the story of Sayyiduna Qabath bin Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him) accepting Islam is this: some men from his people and other Arabs came to him and said: "Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib has come out calling to a religion different from our religion." So Qabath got up and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When he entered upon him (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "O Qabath! Sit down." Qabath fell silent in astonishment. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one who said that if the women of Quraysh came out, they would drive Muhammad and his companions away (from Makkah)?" Qabath said: "By the One who sent you with the truth! This was never spoken by my tongue, nor did my lips murmur it, nor did anyone hear it from me; it was only a thought that arose in my heart. I bear witness that there is no true god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that you are His servant and Messenger, and that what you have brought is the truth."

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (M) and (S) it has been corrupted into "Raziq".

Grading: Its chain is weak, with a series of unknown (majhul) narrators one after another.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We could not find a biography of 'Amr bin Ishaq bin Zibriq, although three people narrated from him, among them al-Tabarani, who narrated from him frequently in his books. Asbagh bin 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Asbagh is how al-Hakim named him, while Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa-l-Ta'dil" (2/ 321) named him 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Marwan bin Aban bin Sulayman bin Malik al-Laythi and said: I asked my father about him and he said: "He is majhul (unknown)." We also do not know his father or his grandfather. 'Allamah al-Haythami, after attributing it to al-Tabarani, stated in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (8/ 287): "In it are narrators whom I do not know."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (19/ 72) and "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (4909), and via him Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5789) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (49/ 232 - 233); Ibn 'Asakir also narrated it via Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Ishaq; both of them from 'Amr bin Ishaq, with this same chain.
Important point: Imam al-Tabarani says that this hadith is narrated from Qabath bin Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him) only through this chain, and Asbagh bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Himsi is alone in narrating it.
Grading: Ibn 'Asakir (49/ 232) narrated something similar via Sahl bin 'Ammar, from 'Umar bin 'Abd Allah bin Razin, from Sufyan bin Husayn, from Khalid bin Durayk, from Qabath; this narration is unreliable.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain Sahl bin 'Ammar is "muttaham bi-l-kadhib" (accused of lying), so it is of no use even as support.
Note / Clarification: In the words of the hadith "wa la tazamzamat bihi shafatay" (nor did my lips murmur it), "zamzamah" means a faint sound that can hardly be understood. Ibn al-Athir gave this explanation in "al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 313).
