Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6769

(2) حسن لغيره، وهذا إسناد ضعيف؛ كذا وقع في "المستدرك": إسماعيل بن أبي أويس عن الزبير بن موسى، والمعروف أنه من رواية عبد العزيز بن أبي ثابت عن الزبير بن موسى، كما رواه الناس، ولا يعرف لابن أبي أويس رواية عن الزبير بن موسى، والذي يظهر أنه لا يدركه فبين وفاتيهما قرابة مئة سنة حسب ما ذكر الذهبي في ترجمتيهما من "تاريخ الإسلام"، فالظاهر أنه سقط من رواية الحاكم عبدُ العزيز بن أبي ثابت بين إسماعيلَ والزُّبير، فرجع الحديث إلى عبد العزيز بن أبي ثابت، وهو واهي الحديث، وسلف الحديث من طريقه عند الحاكم برقم (4258)، وذكرنا هناك من أخرجه. وإسماعيل بن أبي أويس فيه لينٌ، والزبير بن موسى روى عنه جمعٌ، وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، وأبو الحويرث -وهو عبد الرحمن بن معاوية بن الحويرث الزرقي- سيئ الحفظ.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" on the strength of supporting reports, but this particular chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain in "al-Mustadrak" reads Isma'il bin Abi Uways from al-Zubayr bin Musa, whereas what is known is that it is the narration of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Thabit from al-Zubayr bin Musa, as others narrated it; no narration of Ibn Abi Uways from al-Zubayr bin Musa is known, and it appears he did not meet him, since nearly a hundred years separate their deaths according to al-Dhahabi's entries on them in "Tarikh al-Islam". So it seems that 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Thabit, a very weak (wahi al-hadith) narrator, has dropped out of al-Hakim's chain between Isma'il and al-Zubayr; the hadith thus goes back to him, and it has already passed through his route in al-Hakim at number (4258), where we mentioned who narrated it. Isma'il bin Abi Uways has some softness (weakness); al-Zubayr bin Musa had a number of people narrate from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"; and Abu al-Huwayrith, i.e. 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mu'awiyah bin al-Huwayrith al-Zuraqi, is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory).
وأخرجه الطبراني 19 / (75) -وعنه أبو نعيم في "دلائل النبوة" (84) - عن العباس الأسفاطي نفسه، فرواه كما رواه الناس عن إبراهيم بن المنذر الحزامي، عن عبد العزيز بن أبي ثابت، به.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani (19/ 75), and via him Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (84), narrated it from al-'Abbas al-Asfati himself, who narrated it as others did, from Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami, from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Abi Thabit.
وأخرج أبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (5790)، وابن عساكر 49/ 229 من طريق زكريا بن يحيى الكسائي، عن محمد بن فضيل، عن عبد الله بن سعيد بن أبي سعيد، عن جده، قال: دخل قباث بن أشيم أخو بني الملوَّح على مروان بن الحكم، وقباث يومئذ أكبر العرب، فقال له مروان: أنت أكبر أو رسول الله ﷺ؟ فقال: رسول الله ﷺ أكبر مني، وأنا أقدم منه بعشرين سنة، قال: فما أبعدُ ذكرك؟ قال: أذكر خَثَى الفيل. قلنا: إسناده تالف، زكريا الكسائي وعبد الله بن سعيد متروكا الحديث.
Grading: Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5790) and Ibn 'Asakir (49/ 229) narrated it via Zakariyya bin Yahya al-Kisa'i, from Muhammad bin Fudayl, from 'Abd Allah bin Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id, from his grandfather; this chain is "talif" (worthless).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators Zakariyya al-Kisa'i and 'Abd Allah bin Sa'id are both "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith).
Details of the narration: Qabath bin Ashyam (may Allah be pleased with him), of Banu al-Mulawwah, who was at that time the oldest of the Arabs, entered upon Marwan bin al-Hakam, and Marwan asked him: "Are you older (akbar) or the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is greater than me, but I came before him by twenty years." He asked: "What is the earliest thing you remember?" He said: "I remember the dung of the elephant."
وأخرج الترمذي (3619): أنَّ الذي سأل قباث عن ذلك هو عثمانُ بن عفان، وإسناده أصحُّ من حديث أبي الحويرث هذا. وانظر حديث ابن عبّاس السالف (4225).
Grading: According to the narration of Imam al-Tirmidhi (3619), the one who asked Qabath about this was 'Uthman bin 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and its chain is sounder than this hadith of Abu al-Huwayrith. See also the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas that has passed at (4225).
