It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Abdullah that: Al-Ahnaf bin Qays bin Husayn bin al-Nazzal bin Ubayd was a mukhadram (one who lived in both the pre-Islamic era and the era of Islam); he lived in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his agent for collecting charity to his people, and al-Ahnaf helped the agent of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fully, upon which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for him. He relates that: Al-Ahnaf's real name was al-Dahhak, and it is also said that it was Sakhr bin Qays bin Mu'awiyah bin Husayn. He was "ahnaf" (crooked in the foot) from birth, and his mother said in his childhood: "By Allah! Were it not for the crookedness in his foot, there would be no boy in the settlement like him." And he was the most forbearing man among all the Arabs.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word "bin" was wrongly inserted (iqham) after the word "Ubayd".
Grading: Its chain is weak. Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1121) and "Tarikh Asbahan" 1/ 224 via Umar bin Mus'ab bin al-Zubayr, from his paternal uncle Urwah bin al-Zubayr, that al-Ahnaf bin Qays related: when he came to Umar bin al-Khattab with the news of the conquest of 'Tustar', a man from the Muhajirun said: "O Commander of the Believers! This is the one (al-Ahnaf bin Qays) who held back 'Banu Murrah bin Ubayd' from (attacking) us when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us to collect the sadaqah from them, and they had intended to attack us." Note / Clarification: For its details see the next hadith.
Note / Clarification: Linguistic note: "al-hanaf" (with the middle letter voweled) means crookedness of the foot, or one big toe turning toward the other, or walking on the outer side of the foot (the little-toe side), or a slant in the front part of the foot. According to the author of "al-Qamus al-Muhit", from it come the adjectives "ahnaf" (for a man) and "hanfa'" (for a foot).
