Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6699

Abd al-Rahman bin Ammar bin Sa'd al-Qaraz (who was the mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather, that: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to put his fingers in his ears (when giving the adhan), and said: "It makes your voice louder." And the phrases of the adhan of Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) were said twice each, and the phrases of the iqamah once each, while the words 'Qad qamatis-salah' (the prayer has been established) were said only once. And he used to give the adhan on Friday before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when the shadow was equal to a sandal strap (that is, right after the sun passed its zenith). And when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out for the two Eids, he would pass by the way of the house of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), then pass by the people of the tents, then begin with the prayer before the sermon. Then in the first rak'ah he would say the takbir seven times before the recitation, and in the second rak'ah five times before the recitation. Then he would deliver the sermon to the people, then return by the other route, that is, the route of Banu Zurayq, and at the edge of the lane he would slaughter his sacrificial animal with his own hand with a knife. Then he would go towards the houses of Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) at the place called al-Balat. He (peace and blessings be upon him) would go to the two Eids on foot and return on foot. He would say the takbir in the pauses during the sermon, and would say the takbir abundantly in the sermon of the two Eids. When he delivered a sermon on the occasion of war, he would deliver it leaning on a bow, and when he delivered the Friday sermon, he would deliver it leaning on a staff. And when Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) said the takbir in the adhan, he would face the qiblah; then he would remain facing the qiblah while saying twice 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest), twice 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah' (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah), and twice 'Ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah' (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). Then he would turn from the qiblah to the right side and say twice 'Hayya 'ala al-salah' (Come to the prayer), then turn from the qiblah to the left side and say twice 'Hayya 'ala al-falah' (Come to success), then face the qiblah and say: 'Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah' (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts available to us a corruption (scribal error) has occurred here, and "Bilalan" has been written in place of the original word.

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is the weakness of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd bin 'Ammar bin Sa'd al-Qaraz. As for his being named here "Ibn 'Ammar", either Imam al-Humaydi attributed him to his grandfather or he made a mistake. Moreover, 'Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd was inconsistent (mudtarib) in the chain of this narration: sometimes he narrates it "mursal", as in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration here, and sometimes "muttasil" (connected), as will come below. His father (Sa'd bin 'Ammar) is also a "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition) narrator.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5448) via Bishr bin Musa with this same chain in brief, mentioning the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) command to Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) to put his fingers in his ears.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Darimi (1647) and al-Daraqutni (1727) recorded it in brief through the route of Ahmad bin al-Hajjaj, in which it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say seven takbirs in the first rak'ah of the two Eids and five in the second, and would lead the prayer before the sermon.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain has been altered, and the narrator in it, 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Ammar, is weak.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah recorded it in the second part of his "Tarikh" (2868) and al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1288) through the route of Ya'qub bin Humayd bin Kasib, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would take different routes going to and returning from the Eid prayer ground.
Details of the narration: Ya'qub bin Humayd also narrated it with Imam al-Tabarani (1072) and al-Bayhaqi (1/ 396), where he placed it in the Musnad of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you call the adhan, put your fingers in your ears".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator in this chain, Ya'qub bin Humayd, is weak.

Details of the narration: All three narrated it "mawsul" (with a connected chain) from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Sa'd, from his father, from his father (the grandfather), from his grandfather (the great-grandfather).
