Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6693

Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about his name, and he said: My name was Qays, but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named me "Safinah" (ship). He was asked: Why did he (peace and blessings be upon him) name you Safinah? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey together with his Companions, and their luggage became heavy for them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Spread out your cloak." I spread out the cloak, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) put all their luggage in it, then loaded it onto me and said: "Carry it; you are nothing but a ship (safinah)." Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After that day, even if the load of one, two, or five or six camels had been placed on me, it would not have been heavy for me.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets [ ] had dropped out of the manuscripts; we have taken it from the other source works (of takhrij) and entered it here.

Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hashraj bin Nubatah and Sa'id bin Juhman are both "saduq" (truthful) narrators. Abu Nu'aym here is al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 47) through the route of Abu Mansur Zafar bin Muhammad al-'Alawi, from Muhammad bin 'Ali al-Shaybani, from Ahmad bin Hazim alone, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6439) via 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz alone.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (5/ 100) via Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Details of the narration: The narrations of Ibn Sa'd and al-Tabarani mention that Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) declined to tell his (real) name.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (21928), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1192), al-Tabarani (6439), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 369) and al-Bayhaqi (6/ 47) recorded it through various routes from Hashraj bin Nubatah.
Details of the narration: At the beginning of Imam Ahmad's narration this hadith is also mentioned: "The caliphate will last thirty years".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it in brief in (21921) through the route of Hammad bin Zayd, and in (21925 and 21932) through the route of Hammad bin Salamah; both of them narrate it from Sa'id bin Juhman.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (21924) recorded through the route of Sharik bin 'Abd Allah al-Nakha'i that a freed slave of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) (Safinah) said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey; we came to a valley, and I began carrying people across (the water) or carrying them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Today you are nothing but a safinah (ship)".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sharik bin 'Abd Allah is "sayyi' al-hifz" (of poor memory). 'Imran al-Nakhli (Ibn 'Abd Allah bin Kaysan) was narrated from by his son Hammad and by Sharik, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Note / Clarification: "Al-Nakhli" is an attribution to a village named "Nakhlah"; according to al-Sam'ani, it is a well-known village six farsakhs (about 30 kilometres) from Makkah.
