Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ubayd bin Ishaq al-'Attar is weak, and he contradicted the other narrators in his narration of this hadith by attributing the whole report to the Torah, as will be pointed out below. Also, the statements of the critics about Qays bin al-Rabi' differ, but he is closer to weakness; he was afflicted with a son who would insert into his books hadiths that were not his (Qays's).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Qays bin al-Rabi' is alone in narrating this, and being alone is not acceptable from a (weak) narrator like him. That is why Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal said about this hadith (as Ibn al-Qayyim quoted in "Tahdhib al-Sunan" 5/ 297-298) that it is "munkar".
Grading: Imam Abu Dawud, Imam al-Tirmidhi and Imam al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" declared it weak. Abu Hatim called it a "munkar hadith" in "al-'Ilal" (1502) and said that it resembles the hadiths of Abu Khalid al-Wasiti ('Amr bin Khalid, who is matruk and accused), who had fabricated narrations of this kind from Abu Hashim. The meaning is that Qays did not hear it from Abu Hashim al-Rummani; rather it is among the narrations of 'Amr bin Khalid al-Wasiti that were deceptively inserted into Qays's books (by his son), and he narrated it unknowingly.
Note / Clarification: Abu Hashim al-Rummani's actual name is Yahya bin Dinar (there are other views about his father's name). Zadhan is Abu 'Abd Allah al-Kindi al-Kufi al-Darir, their freed slave (mawla).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (23732), Abu Dawud (3761) and al-Tirmidhi (1846) recorded it through various routes from Qays bin al-Rabi' with this same chain, in these words: "I read in the Torah that the blessing of food lies in wudu' (washing the hands) after it. I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The blessing of food lies in wudu' before it and wudu' after it".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Abu Dawud's narration, Salman's words about the Torah have "wudu' before food", and likewise in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration that will come later at number (7259) through the route of Malik bin Isma'il from Qays bin al-Rabi'.
Grading: This is the "idtirab" (inconsistency in the wording) of Qays bin al-Rabi'. Imam al-Tirmidhi says: We know this hadith only from the narration of Qays bin al-Rabi', and Qays is considered weak in hadith.
General principle: We say: No hadith about (ritual) wudu' before or after food is sahih. In our view, what is meant in this report is what some scholars understood, namely "washing the hands". Among them is Imam Abu Dawud, who gave it a chapter heading in his "Sunan": "Chapter on washing the hand before food".
Note / Clarification: Imam Ibn Taymiyyah says in "Majmu' al-Fatawa" (21/ 227): The word "wudu'" in the sense of washing the hands and mouth occurs only in the language of the Jews, as it is narrated that Salman al-Farisi said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): We find in the Torah that the blessing of food lies in wudu' before it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The blessing of food lies in wudu' (washing the hands) before food and after it".
Grading: Imam al-Bayhaqi, after recording this hadith of Salman in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/ 275), declared it weak because of Qays and said: No (marfu') hadith about washing the hand before food is established.
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Khallal narrated that Abu Bakr al-Marrudhi said: I saw Abu 'Abd Allah (Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal) washing his hands before food and after it, even when he was in a state of wudu'.
Note / Clarification: Al-Marrudhi said that he asked Yahya bin Ma'in about this hadith of Qays bin al-Rabi', and he said: How good wudu' (washing the hands) before food and after it is! Ibn al-Qayyim quoted this in "Tahdhib al-Sunan" (5/ 298).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the narrations about washing the hands after food, see the hadith of Abu Hurayrah that will come later at number (7380).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement about the word "Sa'nah" (a narrator's name): some read it with nun and some with ya' (tahtaniyyah). Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in "al-Isti'ab" that reading it with nun (Sa'nah) is more common.
