Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan) because of Sa'id bin Muhammad al-Warraq.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For this reason Imam al-Dhahabi pointed out its defect in "al-Talkhis" and said that al-Warraq was abandoned by Imam al-Daraqutni and other hadith scholars. We say: al-Warraq would sometimes narrate it with the chain "Zayd bin Wahb from Salman" and sometimes with the chain "Zayd from 'Atiyyah bin 'Amir from Salman", and this 'Atiyyah bin 'Amir al-Juhani is an unknown (majhul) narrator.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6087) from Muhammad bin Hisham al-Mustamli and Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna, both of them from Imam 'Ali bin al-Madini, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "Dhamm al-Dunya" (4), "al-Zuhd" (4) and "al-Ju'" (3) via al-Hasan bin al-Sabbah, and Imam al-Bayhaqi transmitted it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5257) through the route of Muhammad bin al-Sabbah al-Bazzaz and in (5258) through the route of Abu Musa Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Harawi.
Details of the narration: All three of them (al-Hasan, Muhammad and Ishaq) narrate it from Sa'id al-Warraq. The first and second narrations of Ibn Abi al-Dunya mention only the first part of the hadith.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3351), Imam al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar - Musnad 'Umar" (1034), al-'Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (1345), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 198) and al-Mizzi in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (20/ 151) recorded it through the route of Muhammad bin al-Sabbah. Also al-Bazzar recorded it in "Musnad al-Bazzar" (2498) through the route of Muhammad bin Isma'il and Ibrahim bin Sa'id, Abu Ya'la (as in al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 3137) from Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Harawi, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (6183) through the route of Sa'id bin 'Anbasah al-Razi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All five of these narrators narrate it from Sa'id al-Warraq, from Musa al-Juhani, from Zayd bin Wahb, from 'Atiyyah bin 'Amir, from Salman al-Farisi. These narrators added 'Atiyyah bin 'Amir between Zayd and Salman, whereas in the narrations of Muhammad bin al-Sabbah and Abu Musa al-Harawi with al-Bayhaqi this intermediary was not mentioned! In Imam al-Tabarani's narration the name 'Atiyyah was reversed into "'Amir bin 'Atiyyah".
Details of the narration: Abu Ya'la's narration has the first part of the hadith, the narrations of Ibn Majah, al-Tabari and al-'Uqayli have the second part, while the remaining narrations are complete. Imam al-'Uqayli said: Its chain needs consideration (fihi nazar).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The first part of this hadith is made unnecessary by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah with the same wording in Sahih Muslim (2956) and elsewhere, and by the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr that will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8080), whose chain may possibly be graded hasan.
Grading: The second part of the hadith will come later in the narration of Abu Juhayfah (7317), but its chain is extremely weak (talif).
Grading: A similar narration from Ibn 'Umar is with Imam Ibn Majah (3350) and Imam al-Tirmidhi (2478), but its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan). For discussion of it and its supporting reports, see (the notes on) "Sunan Ibn Majah".
