Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6676

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Sirin that during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), the price of a single date palm reached a thousand dirhams. During that time, Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to a palm tree, cut it open, took out its pith (jummar) and fed it to his mother. He was asked: Why did you do this, when you can see that the price of a single palm tree has reached a thousand dirhams? He replied: "My mother asked me for it, and she does not ask me for anything that is within my power except that I give it to her."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy); however, the narration of Muhammad bin Sirin from 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is "mursal" (disconnected), as Imam al-Dhahabi stated explicitly in "al-Talkhis".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Dhahabi also objected to it on the ground that Usamah's mother Barakah (Umm Ayman, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) servant and nurse) died in the time of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, but this view goes against the preponderant view.
Important point: The preponderant view is that she died during the caliphate of 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him); Imam al-Dhahabi himself relied on this in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 2/ 227 and in "al-Kashif", citing al-Waqidi. Ibn Hibban also accepted it as correct in "al-Thiqat" 3/ 39.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also supported by a reliable narration in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" 3/ 342, in which Tariq bin Shihab says that when 'Umar was martyred, Umm Ayman said: "Today Islam has been weakened". This indicates that she lived on beyond the period of Abu Bakr.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (370) through the chain of Abu Khalifah al-Fadl bin al-Hubab from Muslim bin Ibrahim (Muslim bin Ibrahim al-Azdi), by this same route.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (225) through the route of Hajjaj bin Nusayr, and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Birr wa-l-Silah" (88) through the route of Yahya al-Qattan (Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan); both of them narrate it from Qurrah bin Khalid.
