Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) states: A Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has granted you an additional prayer, so pray it between the Isha prayer and the morning prayer, and it is the witr." And that Companion (who informed him) was Sayyiduna Abu Basrah al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Tamim says: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) and I were sitting, and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) took me by the hand and we went to Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him). We found him near the door of the house of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: O Abu Basrah! Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has granted you an additional prayer, so pray it between the Isha prayer and the morning prayer: it is the witr, it is the witr"? He replied: Yes.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain is "hasan" because of 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah; for although his memory was poor and he suffered from ikhtilat (confusion), this narration was transmitted from him by several narrators who heard from him before his books were burned and before his confusion, and in addition he has been corroborated. Important point: Abu Hubayrah is 'Abd Allah bin Hubayrah al-Misri. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it in 45 / (27229) through the chain of Yahya bin Ishaq al-Saylahini from Ibn Lahi'ah, by this same route. 1/ 430 - 431. Important point: Yahya is among the narrators who heard from Ibn Lahi'ah before his books were burned. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise, among those who heard from him early is Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri', whose narration is found with Imam al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (4491) and "Ma'ani al-Athar" 1/ 430-431. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it in 39 / (23851) through the chain of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak from Sa'id bin Yazid al-Qitbani from Abu Hubayrah, and this chain is "sahih".
