Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 6648

Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit narrates from his paternal uncle Yazid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that: One day they went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a funeral until they reached al-Baqi'. He (peace and blessings be upon him) (seeing a new grave) asked: "What is this?" The people said: This is so-and-so, the freed slave-woman of such-and-such a tribe. He (peace and blessings be upon him) recognised her and said: "Why did you not inform me about her?" They said: We buried her at the time of Zuhr, and you were taking your midday rest (qaylulah) at that time, so we did not like to trouble you. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood, and the people formed rows behind him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs over her. Then he said: "Whenever anyone among you dies, be sure to inform me, for my prayer is a mercy for them."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is criticism of the memory of 'Abd Allah bin Salih and 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah, but they are corroborated (mutaba'ah); the remaining narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but the break (inqita') between Kharijah and his paternal uncle remains.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (19452), Ibn Majah (1528) and Ibn Hibban (3087, 3092) narrated it by way of Hushaym bin Bashir.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam al-Nasa'i (2160) also narrated it from 'Abd Allah bin Numayr, and Ibn Hibban (3083) from Sharik al-Nakha'i; all of them relate it from 'Uthman bin Hakim al-Awsi, though Sharik's narration is abridged.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has several supporting reports; see "Musnad Ahmad" 14 / (8634) and "Sunan al-Bayhaqi" 4/ 48.
Note / Clarification: "Adhantumuni" means "you informed me or notified me".
Note / Clarification: The word "qa'ilan" is derived from "qaylulah", which means sleeping for a short while at midday.

Important point: The preponderant view is that he lived in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a child, but did not hear (any hadith) directly from him (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: For his biography see "Tahdhib al-Kamal" 4/ 59, "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 3/ 409 and "al-Isabah" 1/ 289.
