Kharijah bin Zayd bin Thabit narrates from his paternal uncle Yazid bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that: He was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions when a funeral procession appeared. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and his Companions stood up too, and they all remained standing until the funeral had passed out of sight. And I think it was (the funeral of) a Jewish man or woman.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) but the chain is broken (munqati'), because Kharijah bin Zayd (who is one of the seven jurists of Madinah) did not meet his paternal uncle Yazid. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it at 32/ (19453) with the chain of 'Abd Allah bin Numayr by this same route. Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i (2058) narrated it in abridged form with the chain of Marwan bin Mu'awiyah al-Fazari from 'Uthman bin Hakim al-Awsi. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Further hadiths on the subject of standing up for a funeral can be seen in "Musnad Ahmad". Note / Clarification: The word "thara" here means "he stood up" (qama).
