It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ziyad bin Labid al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was speaking to his Companions, and he was saying: "The time for knowledge (to depart) has come." I said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how will knowledge depart when we recite the Qur'an, teach it to our sons, and our sons will go on teaching it to their sons until the Hour is established?! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Ibn Labid! May your mother lose you (that is, what are you saying)! I used to consider you the most understanding of the people of Madinah. Do the Jews and the Christians not read the Torah and the Gospel, yet they derive not the slightest benefit from them?"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
