Grading: The hadith is sahih, but this particular chain is da'if (weak) because of the weakness of 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it at (18 / 45) with the chain of 'Ali bin 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Baghawi. Details of the narration: 'Ali bin Zayd said: We were with Anas bin Malik, and he said to his son Abu Bakr: Tell them the hadith of 'Itban bin Malik al-Ansari. Abu Bakr related, in the presence of Anas, that he went to Syria with his father; on the way back Mahmud bin al-Rabi' al-Ansari walked with them, and when taking leave Mahmud said: Shall I not tell you the hadith of 'Itban? Then he related the whole long story of 'Itban losing his sight and of the prayer. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim related a similar narration in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (1936) with the chain of Abu al-Rabi' Sulayman bin Dawud from Hammad bin Zayd. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad also narrated it at 27/ (16484) with the chain of Jarir bin Hazim from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an from Abu Bakr bin Anas.
