Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 664

Alqamah narrates: We were on a journey with Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him). He relieved himself, and we said to him: "Perform ablution so that we may ask you about a verse of the Qur'an." He said: "Ask me; I am not touching it (only reciting it)." Then he recited to us what we wanted, and there was no water between us.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it because it is mawquf.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih, despite a variation reported from al-A'mash: narrators other than Abu al-Ahwas (Sallam bin Sulaym) narrated it from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim (Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i), from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, from Salman (may Allah be pleased with him), as will come later with the author (al-Hakim).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is a variation that does not harm the chain, because Alqamah (Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i) and Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid are both thiqah (trustworthy), and both narrated from Salman (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Khilafiyyat" (305) from the author (al-Hakim), Muhammad bin Abd Allah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (442) narrated it from Ali bin Abd Allah bin Mubashshir and Muhammad bin Makhlad, from al-Abbas al-Duri, with it.
